June 2013 Learnshop — Water Drop Photography

Join Jeff Milsteen at our June Learnshop and see how easily you too can make a photographic splash with a water drop! With very basic equipment, some common household items, and a little patience and luck, you can capture some amazing and creative images in the comfort of your own home.  Jeff will walk us through the basics of how to capture these high-speed images, show examples of the different types of images you can expect to achieve, and then do some live photography to illustrate exactly how easy taking these kinds of photographs can be.

All you need is a digital SLR, a flash that can be used off camera, and items you can find around the house.  This learnshop will cover all the basics for beginners and provide extra information for those who want to take their water drop photography to even higher levels.  Plus, it’s just good clean fun. So join us – and don’t forget your umbrella!

Fourth Tuesday Learnshops are technical sessions, sponsored by SPS for its members. While we ALWAYS welcome visitors interested in photography, if you attend regularly, we ask that you help support the club (which pays for the renting of facilities, supplies, and equipment) by becoming a member!  Click here for details regarding SPS membership.

There is an ebook by Corrie White that is available at www.liquiddropart.com that provides a lot of good information on this topic.

Fun, fun, fun! Thanks, Jeff. I didn't have all the equipment (no off camera flashes), but managed to get some decent shots with my in-camera flash. (Now I have to go mop of the floor.)

It was an excellent presentation and I loved seeing how he works with the set-up that he brought for us. If I can figure out where I have room to do it, I'd love to try...most wonderful images and I was very interested in the history Jeff gave us. Super job!

Excellent presentation, Jeff, very informative and well organized! Thought the flow of the material was done so well. Your explanation of the history really helped my understanding of what was involved in photographing water drops. Will the presentation be posted on the meetup site? Thanks.

I think we'll be fine for the "presentation" part of the program, which will feature all the info you need to try this on your own as well as lots of tips and sample images. I anticipate that will take around 45 minutes or so. We'll play the second half -- live demonstration and letting people who bring their own camera and flash give it a go -- by ear. I'll definitely have it set up so I can do a live demo after the presentation. If folks only want to stay for the first hour, they will go home knowing everything they need to know to try this on their own.

    Carl,
I'll cancel to open a space for someone else. This sounds more advanced than I'm ready for. It's just been too long!

For those attending the June Learnshop, I plan to have at least one (and possibly two) water drop "studios" set up so anyone who wants to can give it a try. I'll have my two Nikon flashes set up for those who can set their DSLR pop-up flashes to wireless "commander" mode; otherwise, feel free to bring your own flash(es) and whatever you use to make them work off camera. I just posted a few shots to the Meetup site so you can get an idea of what we're going for (to the extent these things are ever predictable!).

How do you do it? Going to the meeting to find out

    May 9, 2013

  • Jeff M.

Thanks for posting the link, Carl. I have her ebook and plan to talk a little about her work, which requires use of more sophisticated equipment (available for around $500).
