Using The Histogram - Fact and Fiction - with Nathan Dean
Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta, 2650 N Druid Hills Rd, Atlanta, GA, USPlease join us for our January monthly meeting featuring accomplished photographer and educator Nathan Dean, and enter our digital image competition, “WATER" (more information below.)
In this talk Nathan Dean will tell you all you need to know about the histogram - and then some. He will introduce the histogram and demonstrate how to use it to avoid overexposing or underexposing your shot. Then he will describe the approach called "Expose to the Right" which aims to provide more detail in the image, and he'll give some clues about how and when to adopt it. There is more there - or maybe less - than meets the eye!
Nathan Dean, photographer and physicist, has been a fervent photographer for most of his life. At first, his photographs were mostly souvenirs. But as he worked to improve them, he became passionate about fine art photography, especially after he retired from a career as a university professor, science dean, and vice president. Since then, his works have been acquired by collectors, published in national media, and exhibited in numerous invited solo and small-group shows. They have been accepted in over seventy juried shows and have won multiple awards. He has served Atlanta Celebrates Photography as a member of its Board and its Executive Committee, and he has been co-director of the art program at the Buckhead Library.

Savoy Automobile Museum features five exhibition galleries. Four are temporary rotating galleries and the fifth showcases the permanent Savoy Collection.
The exhibits for our time are:
- Cannonball Run - The Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Race is named for Erwin Baker, who logged an estimated 5.5 million miles and set 55 different cross-country records in the early days of automobiles. In 1933 Baker set a record mark of 53.5 hours to drive from New York to LA. A record that stood for 38 years. In 1971, to protest the new 55 MPH speed limit, Brock Yates and others revived the Cannonball Run, and Brock Yates and Dan Gurney broke Baker’s record with a time of 35 hours and 54 minutes. Here is an opportunity to view vehicles that have run the race and learn the stories of their experiences.
- Roar of Jaguar - Almost immediately following WWII Jaguar entered the field of motorsport racing with the XK120 which was the world’s fastest car when launched. Throughout the decades the company has continuously developed race cars that have been proven winners at Le Mans and other notable events. This exhibition will display a cross section of Jaguar race cars that traces the company’s pursuit of excellence on the track.
- It’s a Duesy - Fred and August Duesenberg began designing engines in the early 1900’s. In 1920, the brothers relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana, where they founded the Duesenberg Automobile & Motors Company. They produced the Duesenberg Model A and continued building winning race cars. The company was purchased by E.L. Cord in 1926 and in 1929 they began selling the Duesenberg Model J, which was powered by a 265 HP straight-eight engine. The body and cabin were built by custom-coach builders. They were considered among the most luxurious American cars ever made and were popular with movie stars, royalty and the wealthy.
- Shelby Built - Carroll Shelby was an American automotive designer, racing driver, and entrepreneur best known for his involvement with AC Cobra and Mustang-based performance cars. He was the only individual to win 24 Hours of Le Mans as a driver, team manager, and manufacturer. He was known for creating high performance cars for both the street and track. He not only worked for Ford but also collaborated with other manufacturers. This exhibit highlights not only the most well-known vehicles, but also some of the lesser-known ones.
- The Savoy Collection - features twelve vehicles from Savoy’s special permanent collection.
This is an opportunity to photograph the individual beauty and design of the vehicles.

The museum charges $17. If you are already a member, admission is free. You can purchase the tickets online or at the door. We will meet at the museum's entrance.
We will meet for lunch at a nearby restaurant (TBD) afterwards for anyone who is interested.
Please note - the Savoy does not permit monopods, flashes, tripods or bags larger than 12”x 6” x 12” in the museum.

Macro Magic: Capturing Beauty in Small Details - with Liz Esarove
Location not specified yetMacro photography is the art of capturing close-up photos of subjects and making them appear larger than life size. Everywhere around us there are details and patterns that are fascinating when you look closely at them. Liz has been practicing macro photography for about 15 years; she finds beauty in the details of flowers, insects, dewdrops, and other subjects. Join us as she shares her lessons learned about this unique form of photography including:
· What equipment you need to get started.
· How macro photography differs from other forms of photography.
· Tips for focusing, depth of field, and lighting.
Liz Esarove is a member of Southeastern Photographic Society and Georgia Nature Photographers Association. While her photography includes a variety of subject matter, her favorite has always been macro. It unlocks mystery, documenting the unseen and revealing the beauty of the world.
Please note: This month's Learnshop will be ONLINE. The link will be sent only to those who RSVP to this announcement.
