Object-Oriented JavaScript

Meetup starts at 6:30pm, with 30 minutes of social time. Beginning at 7pm, Jordan Kasper will present Object-Oriented JavaScript (yes, it really exists):

JavaScript gets a bad rap for not being a "full" programming language, but with the introduction of platforms and frameworks like NodeJS, Backbone, and others, developers are starting to realize how powerful this language can be.

It's time to give JavaScript the attention it deserves and you can start your re-education by accepting that while JavaScript may exhibit some characteristics of a functional language, it really is a multi-paradigm language with strong support for Object-Oriented Programming.

This talk will give attendees a crash course in Object-Oriented JavaScript covering:

  • core OOP principles
  • the prototype object and constructors
  • member access types (public, private, & privileged)
  • prototypical inheritance
  • interfaces (mixins)

Developers will come out of this session ready to implement core OOP concepts in JavaScript and with knowledge of how inheritance in JavaScript differs from many of the other languages they know.

Starting about 8:15pm, we'll move into a hacking session to experiment with the material that's been presented, and with JavaScript and node.js in general.

Complementary sodas and sandwiches will be provided, so come hungry, come thirsty, bring your laptop and be ready to code!

FYI, note that the address is actually 333 Beaumont, right at the corner of Locust and Beaumont.

BTW, what's the parking situation that time of day?

Parking on the street is fine and there is a lot next door to our building that you are allowed to park at.

Probably. Guess I'll drive to work that day; too much walking in bad weather to use Bi-State from 5th & Washington.
