Topic - Contiki and the Internet of Things
The Internet of Things (IoT) has the potential to change our lives in profound ways by allowing tiny, radio-equipped sensors to communicate with the cloud across the Internet, enabling both mobile apps and cloud services to be built around immediate data from the physical environment. But building the Internet of Things has profound technical challenges: can we run the Internet protocols on devices with less than 1 mW of battery power and less than 10 kilobytes of memory? Do we need standardization? How can IoT devices find each other and connect to the cloud in power-efficient ways? How do we write applications running on top of the Internet of Things?
The Contiki open source operating system for the Internet of Things was developed to give an IP address to even the tiniest of devices.
Contiki does full IPv4 and IPv6 networking on battery-operated devices with magnitudes less memory and resources than previous systems.
Contiki and its components has been used in a wide variety of products and systems, ranging from airplanes, film production equipment, wireless sensors, and PlayStation games.
This talk covers:
- Where and how is the Internet of Things is used - today and tomorrow.
- Why IPv6 for the Internet of Things?
- Beyond WiFi: enabling battery operated IPv6 networks with years of lifetime.
- How do we do routing for low-power IPv6 networks, and how do we make it interoperate across different vendors?
- Cloud connectivity: how the cloud is extended to the physical world through the Internet of Things.
- Programming the Internet of Things: the novel programming concepts needed to make low-power wireless networked devices.
- The Antelope Database of Things: an SQL DBMS for the tiniest of IoT devices.

About the speaker
Adam Dhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/9/1/6/event_93926902.jpegunkels, PhD, is a pioneer in the Internet of Things area, and author of the Contiki operating system, the uIP and lwIP TCP/IP stacks, and the protothreads programming abstraction, used in a large number of IoT systems for over a decade. In 2009, the MIT Technology Review named him a TR35, top 35 innovator under 35. He has also received the ACM SIGOPS EuroSys Roger Needham award and the ERCIM Cor Baayen award. He is a co-founder of the IPSO Alliance together with a group of major IoT industry vendors. His IoT book, "Interconnecting Smart Objects with IP - the Next Internet", co-authored with JP Vasseur and with a foreword by Vint Cerf, was published in 2010.
