The art and science of fossils - an evening with paleontologist Stefan Perner
Details
To coencide with the arrival of a truly spectacular fossil in the Nature Gallery (you'll have to attend to find out what it is - you won't be disappointed!) we are pleased to present our speaker, fossil expert Stefan Perner talking about the art and science of fossils.
Stefan's experience in paleontology began as a child. His parents, Barbara and Dr. Thomas Perner, a doctor in paleontology, have been involved with fossils since the early 1970's. Stefan grew up digging in world famous fossil pits all over Europe. When Stefan went off to college in Germany to study Paleontology himself, he realized early on that he could learn much more from the hands on experience and personal instruction from his father. Father and son were hired by the University of Peru to train paleontological students in exaction field work in the Atacama Desert, as well as fossil preparation in the lab.
After 6 months in Peru, the Perners took their next commission with the University of Beijing where they again trained students in excavation fieldwork and preparation in the Gansu, Liaoning and inner Mongolia provinces. It was at the University of Beijing that Stefen earned honorary distinction as a professor of Paleontology.
After 2 years in China, father and son returned to Germany where Stefan took the lead in the family business, Fossil Gallerie Bad Homburg. In just ten years, Stefan became a world respected consultant for museums and various institutes of higher learning all over Europe. At this time, the Perners branched out into the United States by forming the American company Zeder Co. International Inc. The Perners then acquired fossil quarries in Wyoming. These new acquisitions in America catapulted the Perners to the forefront of the fossil industry in the United States. Zeder Co. International is now a consultant for museums, universities, and private collectors worldwide and is well-respected for fine fossils and expertise.
