Introduction to Sailing Seminar, Sail-YSL

Details
This shore-based seminar is aimed at members who have never sailed before but are interested in doing so. Also members with less experience aiming at refreshing their knowledge are welcome to join.
Subjects to be covered include:
• principle of how a sail works - the physics
• types of boats
• types of sails
• terminology
• points of sail - need for wind awareness
• essential knots, types of rope, rope handling (coiling, throwing etc.)
• basic safety issues, buoyancy aids, dangers on the boat (e.g. boom), rope handling from a safety point of view
• basics of how to know where you are, 3 point fixes etc.
The idea is for a fairly hands-on session with some of the subjects covered in theory in the classroom and, weather-permitting, outside on the schools’ forecourt (e.g. now that you know in theory what a halyard is, actually raise a sail with it).
The seminar will be held at Sail YSL premises from 10.00 to 15.00 with a break for lunch (i.e. 2 x 2 hours). The price of the seminar is 60 CHF per person excluding food which is paid upon registration. No shows will forfeit their fee, while cancelations don’t get a refund but carry it over as a credit for the next time the course will run.
To register, please RSVP to this event and then send an email from your private account (not from within meetup.com) to my account (pnpgroupemail@gmail.com). I will then give you my bank details so that you transfer the fee. Registration is open until April 1st, 2014 and is considered final if I have received the fee before this deadline. Late registration could be arranged by contacting me directly.
A limit of 12 participants will be set with priority based on registration date. Please note that the seminar will be held ONLY IF there are 4 or more participants. Otherwise your participation fee will be returned.
Sail YSL is located in Richterswil and can be reached in 30 minutes from Zurich HB. Directions can be found here http://sail-ysl.ch/how-to-find-us/
