As of August 1, 2011 it is not necessary to obtain a permit from the City of San Antonio to paddle on the San Antonio River (THAT DO NOT HAVE THE RIVER BARGES) along with several other venue locations as well. Here is the respective link to verify: http://www.sanantonio.gov/parksandrec/spotlight_watercraft.aspx Assuming I have no major problems from work that take me outside of town I am planning on doing a Training Run on the San Antonio River in my solo canoe on September 14 from Alamo Street to Nueva Street a distance of about .7 miles according to Map-My- Tri. http://www.mapmytri.com/routes/view/47235942 The intent would be to do about of doing about 3 laps up & back with a possible run option along the Mission Trail Corridor. With each Lap being approximately 1.73 miles. You are welcomed to join me if you wish. THE PLAN Date: September 14, Wednesday Time: 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM King William Zone, San Antonio River Launch & Recovery Area: Guenther Street by San Antonio River Authority, 100 E. Guenther Boundary: King William zone from Nueva Street to Alamo Street Map Quest Link: http://mapq.st/r3Wbl8 Meet at the Boat Ramp just under Guether Street by the San Antonio River Authority at 5:30 PM with the intent of doing about one hour of paddling. I am planning on going in my Wenonah Advantage using a single blade paddle. RIVER & WEATHER CONDITIONS This is a channelized section of the San Antonio River that is dammed in with a a Dam at Alamo Street (depth approximately 8 to 10 feet) with an Upstream dam at Nueva Street. The depth at the upstream end is approximatly 1.5 feet. This section is actually kind of cool to train on as the water resistance gradually increases against the hull of the boat. You can begin to feel the resistance about half way upstream. The width of the river is about 50 feet. Nice scenery as this is in the area as it is abounded by the famed Historic King Williams District on one side and the HEB Headquarters on the other side. Weather Conditions for San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday at 5:00 to 6:00 PM is the following: Mostly sunny, breezy and hot 96 degrees Wind South at MPH Gust of 27 MPH SOME HELPFUL LINKS AccuWeather – San Antonio, Texas http://www.accuweather.com/us/tx/san-antonio/78249/city-weather-forecast.asp Note: If the expected high for San Antonio is below 60 degrees or there is a chance of heavy rain I am not going to do this run.
