Skiing in the backcountry, away from resorts, is an amazing experience that combines hiking, climbing, endurance, mountaineering, possibly camping, and of course, skiing on all sorts of terrain and snow. Usually you can cover even more ground on skis than you can during the dry months of summer, especially in our local mountains. Southern California provides us with a surprising amount of ski terrain, even in low snow years. This group is for everyone who currently skis the backcountry, and for those who want to learn how. It is highly recommended that you are comfortable skiing/riding on what would normally be called intermediate (blue) terrain at a resort to join even our easiest outings.  Beyond that, it doesn't matter how good you are, as long as you have a positive attitude.  In my opinion, the best rider is the one having the most fun!

There are many disciplines of backcountry riding. For our events, the following modes of backcountry travel are strongly recommended: Alpine Touring (Randonee), Telemark, and Splitboard. For snowboarders just getting in to the backcountry arena, you can start by strapping your board to your pack and walking in snowshoes, but be aware that this is a slow mode of travel.

This fall we'll have some informational meetings for those wanting to learn more about backcountry ski gear and technique. We'll also do some planning for the upcoming season. I'd like to do some cross training as well to prepare for the upcoming season.  When the snow flies, we'll hit the so-cal mountains (San Gorgonio, San Jacinto, Baldy), the Sierra, and around the world. In 2011 and beyond I plan on staging trips to Alaska, British Columbia, and South America, just to name a few. Stay tuned for more including our first meeting! Think snow!

Any activity in the backcountry is inherently dangerous, and skiing/snowboarding is no exception.  Our activities will be unguided (unless otherwise stated) and each member is responsible for her/his own safety.  It is your job to recognize hazards and make decisions.  Most of our activities will involve some form of practice in decision making, avalanche safety, etc., but ultimately your safety is your own responsibility.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
