Code Kitchen: Art Show Proposal Party Part 1

Part of Art Installation Series

Code Kitchen is excited to announce our very first art show! In early December, we’ll be hosting a night of cocktails and new media art, and we’d like you to participate. Whether this is your first show or your fiftieth, we’ll be providing space and the ambiance to show your work.

In preparation for the show, we’ll be increasing our meeting frequency. Now you can enjoy Code Kitchen every two weeks! We’ll be using these extra meetings to document our work and provide group feedback and advice leading up to the show. (We’ve even created a handy calendar (https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=codekitchensd%40gmail.com&ctz=America/Los_Angeles) to keep up with the dates.)

To kick things off, we’re holding a two-part meetup to get your creative juices flowing and help you find collaborators, if you want them. In the first part, come discuss what inspires you, what you need help with, and explore interesting precedents. This will be a conversational-style meeting where we’ll “break the ice” between Code Kitchen members.

Two weeks later, on October 12 we’ll continue our kickoff with a low-pressure “art pitch” session. Take the mic and talk about your ideas. If you want to collaborate, this is the time to link up with other code chefs. Find a person (or four) who complements your skills. If you prefer to work alone, get some feedback on your initial idea. If you can’t make one meeting or the other, you can still connect with folks on our Slack. (Ping us for more details.)

Great, but what about the show?

The theme of our show is “Synthetically Natural”. Pieces should explore the juxtaposition of these two concepts. Feel free to interpret the term broadly - have fun with it. (We’ll plan to show some inspiration in our PART ONE meeting this week, if you need ideas. And yes: we’re keeping it intentionally open-ended!)

Entries can be of any medium, as long as they incorporate technology in some way. Note that this can include sculpture or other physically-based work...it doesn’t have to live solely on screens.

To submit a proposal, please email codekitchensd@gmail.com with the following information:

• Name of artist(s)

• Title of piece

• Description of piece and how it relates to the them

• Brief sketch of piece

• In-Progress photos (if available)

• Technology requirements (power, screens, laptops, projectors, etc.)

We’ll do our best to accommodate requests, but talk to us in advance if there’s any doubt

Submit idea by November 9th

Participating artists will be notified by November 15th
