September Meetup: Parallel Computing in R

Hey everyone, thanks again for the impressive turnout at last month's meeting. Thanks to the Ansir Innovation Center as well for lending us their great space.

We will be hosting our next meeting at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. Glenn Lockwood, a team member of the SDSC, will be presenting on parallelization libraries such as parallel and snow followed by an overview of Hadoop implementations in R. For more information on this topic checkout the CRAN Task View: High-Performance and Parallel Computing with R.

The presentation will start at 6:30pm and last approximately one hour. Information on parking/getting there:

I'll bring some taco platters to hold you guys over until dinner.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all there,

KD

P.S.

My company is looking for a data science intern. If anyone knows of a compsci or stats student (w/ some dev experience) that is comfortable with a client facing role. Please forward me their info.

I'll bring some taco platters that might be enough to hold you over until dinner, but I wouldn't count on being full. There are water fountains in the auditorium, but there will not be any drinks so please bring a bottle.

I'll be posting the slides after the talk to my website, and the example scripts and supporting information for what we'll talk about can be found here: http://users.sdsc.edu/~glockwood/classes/sdrug2013-09.php. Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

This MeetUp will be taking place in the Auditorium at SDSC...for those who have come to other events at SDSC, it is in front of the Synthesis Center conference room down the stairs, or directly to the right of the Hopkins Parking structure if you are viewing it from Hopkins Drive.

Apologies - didn't see the link. No need to respond. In case anyone else had the same question, from the link provided:

"Purchase the appropriate parking permit at the machine on that level. $1 per 45 minutes, accepts credit card or exact change only.
    Full-day permit is $8."

I few questions regarding parking for this week's meetup: Where do you recommend parking? I know UCSD generally charges for parking 24 hours a day on weekdays - do we need exact change? If so, about how much?

Gutted to be out of town when this is happening. Do people ever attend these things remotely?

Can we park on campus at that time?

There's plenty of parking next door to SDSC in the Hopkins parking structure, but it'll cost a couple dollars ($4 at most). Credit cards accepted.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
