Type Classes in Scala

Type classes are a powerful abstraction used in Scala and the Scalaz library. This Meetup will explore what a type class is, how to create your own type classes, and examples from other libraries.

Here is some background reading to get you going:

Section 7.3 of Scala in Depth also has some good information if you have access to that.

    When is next meeting?

Not sure ... my feeling is that since the holidays are around the corner, most user groups have a hard time scheduling talks. On the other hand, anybody is welcome to lead a talk -- there are tons of topics open!

Seems that only photos can be uploaded and not pdf. In any case, if any of you want to get hold of the presentation materials, they are all at https://github.com/Kai-Chen/presentations in the typeclass directory.

To run the slide, you'd need to clone revealjs, and then either make a link to the typeclass.html or copy the html file there, and then load it in the browser (not sure if it works if it's just loaded as a local file, but any webserver would do -- revealjs uses node to serve).

I'm at the Scala Summit in Colorado, so I won't make it tonight. Look forward to hearing about the discussions though.

Sounds fun! You'll have to share the details of what goes on there with us.

Thanks for the intro, Brian. I was coming here to post something, but this is a very nice surprise. I even visited the links. There's an example using structural typing in the 2nd link, which would warm a ruby programmer's heart. But why duck type if you can type class? :)

I probably won't have enough time to prepare a talk on it before September. But I can put together some stuff that I've come across that made sense to me. So it'd be more in the format of an interactive session than that of a slide-based presentation, if that's okay.

Yes, that's okay. Our presentations and demos tend to be informal. I can set this up for September if that works for you.

    Hi Kai,

There was no specific topic for the July Meetup. We discussed various things happening in Scala land including people's work and personal projects. I think a discussion or talk on Typeclasses is a good idea. I already have a talk setup for August though that I have to put on the site. Are you interested in doing a talk on Typeclasses or having a Meetup with this as the topic?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
