Ad Hoc Reporting: Lessons & Tricks with SSRS, SSAS, & MDX

Sometimes Self-Service BI Tools are not the right option for ad hoc reporting with cubes. There can be reasons of compliance and control. Multi-tenant BI applications have challenges with Self-Service BI tools. Also, sometimes Business Intelligence is just not intelligent about an application domain.

Creating a Reporting Services report that provides dynamic layout (PivotTable-like features ) has its challenges. On September 3rd, Business Intelligence expert Dan Bulos will look at a dynamic layout project and the techniques and tricks he used.

You'll learn about:

• Dynamic row & column layout

• On-The-Fly attribute reporting hierarchies (even across dimensions)

• Across dimensions other than measure (matrix reports are too slow)

• Dealing with numeric formatting (harder in an ad hoc environment)

• Adding a little more intelligence (% of total not useful for Gross Margin%)

• Dealing with multi-tenancy
