Meet & Greet + Project Planning

  • March 1, 2014 · 12:00 PM

First Meetup!

Etsy has generously offered to host our events, and provide food/beverages.

Introduce yourself to the other members and their minds. This will largely serve to poll the group to create a foundation for future events. In addition to fleshing out the group structure, we will also be hosting a mini-building session. Bring whatever you want to use!

I will be providing a few things to inspire people including:

•  Sewing machine

•  Arduino to test with

•  Breadboard

•  Wires

•  Soldering iron

Learn to Solder Kit

•  Buttload of tape

•  Lilypad Accelerometer

•  Various craft books/sewing patterns

•  FOOD!!! (Thanks, etsy!)

Feel free to bring your own supplies to share (or not share)!

No project? That's okay!

Your opinion is still needed to help shape later meetups, and you will have plenty of fun just mind-melding and getting inspired by others. Also, this meetup will largely serve to help people without ideas find something to work on.

See you there.

I am incredibly excited to get this group going. If you are going to come to any meetups here, I highly suggest you attend this one so we can find the best way to conduct our events.

@Mitch - Hi! I'm the one interested in deployable wings for a mini-hat. Those instructables are great -- I had found other wings but the instructions were a little harder to follow (particularly for a first time out). Thanks!

@Mike - I might be interested in joining a fun with arduino night, depending on timing. Great idea!

Thanks Mike for the posting suggestion.... I'm working on trying to get something really small to work. If anyone has any suggestions or directions to point me in for hardware that would be amazing. By "really small" I mean: wearable size, all pieces able to fit in a 1" diameter or less, to create a lighted glow (not too bright), prefer without battery complications or at least small batteries involved, light responsive sensor.

On a separate project I would also be interested in finding a sensor that detects and records movement such as heartbeat or breathing but small in size.

Any headway on these? For the first one, you thinking a steady glow or blinking or...? If you want small and steady, sounds like maybe you could have a basic circuit with a small battery powering an LED and a photovoltaic sensor. I'm pretty noob at this though. If you wanted more complicated behavior I think you'd need a bigger circuit and/or a programmable chip (bigger)

I've posted the next meetup! I am not going to announce it until two weeks before the event date.

Yes on thanks to everyone, that was fun.

So I'm planning to learn either arduino or something smaller. If anyone wants to meet up once or twice before the next meeting and do some co-learning, hit me up.

Also, people who would rather focus on the design side, if you post your project ideas, it can get us all thinking about what kind of circuits you might be able to use...

Who was the person who wanted to make a fascinator hat with retractable wings? Here's a design for dragon wings - I think you could scale the project down to work for a hat:

Thanks to everyone for showing up. Special thanks to Jensen for organizing and to Jensen and Mitch for the electronics intro. You're info made something that is entirely novel to me seem approachable. I'm really excited by the opportunity to incorporate a new medium (electronics) into my work - that is so different than any I have used before. I think I may have found the spark for my sparkly attire here: http://www.adafruit.com/products/659

It is so cool ... "(1.75" diameter, weighing 4.4 grams).
it has the best stainless steel threads, sensors, GPS modules and chainable LED NeoPixels," and you can hand wash it!

Translation... the main board is small and light weight, you can connect the LEDs (~12ea) with sewable threads, it has a movement sensor and it's washable!

Looking forward to seeing your project ideas in April, and maybe updates here.

    Best,
    Kristin

Hi, I want to know the agenda for the meetup. I have swimming class in the morning and want to know if I would be missing anything if I arrive at 1pm. Thanks in advance!

    February 26

    • Jensen H.

Sure! I will type up an agenda tonight and send it out. I guess the only thing you would miss at this point are the project/people/group introductions, but I can brief the people who will show up a bit late.

    Hi everyone!

It's getting closer to the meetup day. Since we have a waitlist now, please be sure you can make this event and politely RSVP 'no' if you cannot so others can fill your spots. If you elected to bring a guest be sure that they are coming as well.

    Looking forward to it!

  • Jensen H.

Hooray- this event has completely filled up.

If you figure later that you cannot make this event please respectfully change your RSVP so more people can have the opportunity.

I will send an update later this month with more event details!
