Announcing a new Meetup for San Diego Independent Travel Meetup!

What: Southeast Asia Night

When: December 15,[masked]:30 PM

Where: Quoc Te (International Restaurant) at 4344 Convoy St.

In my edition of "Southeast Asia on a Shoestring", author and Lonely Planet's founder Tony Wheeler says that if he had to pick just one region of the world to spend the rest of his life traveling, it would be Southeast Asia, with its huge diversity of nature, peoples, food, and culture.

At this time of the year, much of the world is either too cold or too hot to visit comfortably. But not Southeast Asia. In fact, December, January, and February are the best months to visit this region of the world. Although fairly close to the equator, these are the months when the weather is dry and the temperatures are not too extreme.

I have heard from several members that are planning to travel to Southeast Asia soon, so we decided to make this the first of our evenings dedicated to travel in a particular region of the world.

If you have ever thought of traveling to Southeast Asia, or if you have been there yourself, please attend. Those who have been there, please come with a few tips on your favorite places to go or stay or particular activities you enjoyed while there. Members who are planning a trip, bring a notepad so you can jot down these ideas. I personally spent almost four months traveling there earlier this year, so I'll have some ideas of my own to contribute.

In particular, we're talking about Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar (Burma), Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, East Timor, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines.

We'll meet at a Vietnamese restaurant so you can try some of the region's food, and they will give us our own room so we will all be able to hear each other. We can either share a bunch of dishes or people can order individually. We'll decide that night. Most of their Vietnamese dishes are in the $6 range. They also have Chinese dishes, which tend to run a few dollars more.

Hope to see you there!
