What we’re about

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE TEXT BELOW BEFORE COMING TO A MEETUP. THIS INCLUDES IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SKILL LEVELS AND GAME ETIQUETTE.

While we welcome novices and beginner-level players, please be mindful of the fact that games are for players at the intermediate level and above. See below for our definition of intermediate vs beginner and guidelines for mixed-level play.

We play hard but aren't overly intense about it. We laugh, we high-five, we say "good serve!" even to the team across the net, and we don't give people a hard time for playing less-than-perfectly. We are here to play good volleyball and enjoy the company of good people.

So come join! Shoes are optional. :)

GUIDELINES FOR MIXED-LEVEL PLAY

We are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable volleyball environment for everyone. If your behavior on court is dangerous, disruptive, or offensive, you may be asked to leave.

We sometimes have more players than room on the courts. If you are playing while there are people waiting to play, please take yourself off the court after a maximum of two games, so everybody has a chance to play.

Intermediate and Beyond. An intermediate player knows the rules of the game, consistently applies the order of play (bump-set-spike, setter always gets the second hit unless calling "help", etc.), and can hit a ball in the intended direction at least 60% of the time from any position, including serving.

This meetup group is  oriented toward players who play at an intermediate level or above.

Beginner. A beginner player has a basic understanding of the rules of the game, consistently applies the order of play (bump-set-spike, setter always gets the second hit unless calling "help", etc.), but on average, makes an error over 50% of the time (ex: hits the ball out of bounds, into the net, misses a hit, etc).

If you're unsure of your skill level, ask the Organizer!!

During the pandemic/shelter-in-place, we are not allowing Beginners to play in our games.

We do welcome you to come and improve your skills by doing drills with other Beginners. We will provide balls and may also provide an extra net / coaching for free! If you use one of our nets, please help set it up and take it down.

We've all been beginners once, and have grown thanks to the patience and guidance of better players who were willing to play with us and teach us.  We also believe the fastest way to become an Intermediate player is to do drills instead of trying to play - It's better to touch the ball often and repeatedly to create muscle memory in a controlled situation.

WHEN CAN A BEGINNER PLAY? When you feel you're an Intermediate, tell the Organizer that you're ready to prove it. If your skills are still not at the Intermediate level, we encourage you to keep practicing - we hope to quickly turn Beginners into Intermediates and look forward to playing with you soon!
