They're Watching You: Anti-Surveillance Workshop

Details

"They're Watching You: Anti-surveillance Workshop for Activists and Journalists"

At this workshop you will learn why surveillance is dangerous, why you should care, and how you -- whether you're an activist, journalist, or concerned citizen -- can defend yourself against it. Specifically you will learn how to send and receive encrypted text messages, phone calls, and instant messages, as well as how to browse the web anonymously, which technologies you or your organization should look into using to securely accept documents from leakers and whistleblowers, and more.

Toward the end of the intro talk, a new project will be unveiled for the first time that helps activists and other vulnerable people anonymously store and share files with each other, and do so using only free and open source software, at no cost to them.

Everyone is welcome to attend! This is an important topic, and we want to help as many people as possible earn some of their privacy back. This event is free.

There are two sessions: 10:30am to 12:30pm, and 1:30pm to 3:30pm.

Schedule:

  • 10:30am to 11:15am -- Talk by Steve Phillips covering why surveillance is so dangerous, how it affects everyone, helpful ways of thinking about privacy simply, which software tools are useful for maintaining your privacy in which situations, and a sketch of how these tools work.

  • 11:15am to 12:30pm -- Hands-on workshop where you can install privacy-enhancing software on your devices, and learn how to use them. Bring your smartphones, laptops, and tablets that you'd like to make more secure.

  • 12:30pm to 1:30pm -- Break

  • 1:30pm to 2:15pm -- Talk (same as 10:30am talk)

  • 2:15pm to 3:30pm -- Workshop (same as 11:15 one)

See you there, and tell your friends! If you have any questions, please email steve@tryingtobeawesome.com .
