Temescal Canyon to Will Rodgers State park

Temescal Canyon to Will Rodgers

This hike can be done in two ways. We will do Temescal Canyon first. This hike begins with a moderate hill up to a small waterfall, then, it continues up to the ridge. From there, you can see gorgeous views of the ocean, and feel the ocean breezes. This is a cool hike for summer, and from the ridge, it is all flat or all downhill. This portion of the hike is about 3.5 miles. So, people looking for an easy hike, with a little challenge going up the first hill will be thrilled with this portion. Easy hikers may wish to leave at this point, and can return to the parking lot.

From this point, the hike will continue to Will Rodgers Park, adding about 5 miles to the first 3.5 miles in Temescal Canyon. There is some beautiful scenery along the way, and we usually see deer, so bring your camera. There are no major hills to climb, so this portion is also fairly easy, and cool with lots of shady areas and ocean views.

Parking is $7.00 at Temescal

For this hike, we will meet at Towsley at 6:45 AM, leave Towsley at 7:00, and arrive at Temescal Park at 8:00 to begin the hike.

Directions to Towsley: Take the I-5 south from Valencia to Calgrove Blvd. Exit. Turn right. Go through the signal. Immediately on the right side you will see the entrance to Towsley/Ed Davis Park. Do not enter the gate. Park in the parking lot outside the gate and look for the hike leader. We will carpool from this point, so please help your driver with gas and parking fees.

Directions to Temescal Park: Take the I-5 South to the 405 South. Exit at Sunset Blvd. Turn left at the base of the offramp, and make a quick right onto Sunset Blvd. Stay on Sunset until you hit Temescal Cyn Road. Turn right. Take care to observe the stop sign and speed limit as they give out hundreds of tickets here. Pay the iron ranger $7.00 to park. Meet your group by the bathroom at the top of the parking lot at 8:00 sharp.

WTH? I was there at Topanga Park. Although I took a wrong turn on the way there I was there 8:05 or so at the proposed meeting location. This was a group activity, right? Did I miss something?

Bummer. Well, maybe the next time the meeting spot should be more finite. Meeting "by the bathrooms at the top of the parking lot" could've been either bathroom because each lot has a bathroom on its north end -- and to a newbie, you may think the lower bathroom is the only one unless you ask someone who knows. If it was worded differently, I would've gone straight to the right place. Also, when I checked in on Meetup and asked, noone else checked in and replied, so it was too late to set me straight. Then, even though I found someone else that looked lost that was standing at the right spot before the meeting time, he didn't see them either, so WHO KNOWS where they waited! What a mess! : ) We'll sure know for next time, Chris!

Itt wasnt a big deal because its only a mile or so from Temescal. Luckily I realized something was wrong. Anyway, next time, try again!

Chris, we waited for you. First at the bathroom, and then at the trail head before we left. Sorry we missed you! We ran into Ken, and his guests later on. Why were you at Topanga Park? You should have been at Temescal.

I wish you had carpooled with us! We headed straight up the road that you were on (before you turned on to the trail that went to Will Rogers). If you'd kept going, you probably would have found us in a few minutes. What a shame. Next time I'm taking you in my car so nothing happens to you!!! :o)

Like I said, under normal circumstances I would have. I just had somewhere to be afterward in the SF Valley. We'll try again next time.

I found Leonard, but noone else. He waited from 7:50 to now (8:25) at the top bathrooms, but maybe you all left early. Maybe we'll catch up on the trail or see you next time?

Hi Diane, I arrived at the lower parking lot around 7:45 and waited at the restroom there for a bit before arriving at restroom at the larger lot. I was absolutely there prior to 8:00. There was no one from Santa Clarita there (I would ask if they were with the SC meet-up). I was there at 7:50 and then waited, with Molly for several minutes before we decided to take off on our own. I was standing right in front of the restrooms.

DANG!!! I didn't know there were even rest rooms there! We were at the upper parking lot at those rest rooms. Well, live and learn, I guess. That's where we went wrong!

I'd anyone interested in carpooling from Towsley? I will post the parking fee at Temescal and help with gas. Let me know asap!!! I'd like to go but don't feel confident on finding my way on my own!

We are meeting at Towsley at 6:45 to carpool. I will be there to arrange carpools in the AM.

Oops. That should be: "With a car shuttle between Temescal and Will Rogers, the hiking distance is about 12 miles."

    June 7, 2013

    • Dianne E.

I do not do the route you are describing, Jon S.

      July 25, 2013

The hiking distance for a loop hike starting at Temescal, up the ridge past the waterfall, along the fire road to the Backbone Tr, down Rogers Rd to the State Park, and then back across the connector trail to the Temescal parking lot is about 14 mi.

A car shuttle between Temescal and Will Rogers is about 12 miles. An out and back hike from the parking lot to Temescal Pk (just before the junction with Rogers Rd) is about 10 mi rt.

It's about 1.5 mi from the parking lot, past the waterfall, up the trail to the ridge. It is neither flat nor downhill once reaching the ridge. There is about 1000' of gain in the 3 miles along the fire road to the turnoff to Rogers Rd.

Except for the beginning of the hike and the trail from the waterfall to the ridge, almost all of the hike is unshaded and there's usually nothing in the way of ocean breezes. It can be quite hot in July. Bring plenty of water, 3 qts minimum.

There is free parking on Temescal Cyn Rd just south of Sunset.

    June 7, 2013

    • Dianne E.

Jon, this is not the exact route we will be taking, there is shade, we've had ocean breezes every time we've been there, and in the AM there is sometimes fog. The entire route is not even close to 14 miles. There are several ways to do this hike, and obviously, you are thinking of a different route.

      July 22, 2013

    • Dianne E.

Kim, I am leading the hike, and it is 8.5 miles. Jon is thinking of a different route. We do not go up on the fire road at all, we do not go up above the waterfall.

Pending that I can carpool...hoping I can go, looks fun!

Still confused. How long is this hike?

    1 · July 25, 2013

    • Dianne E.

The hike is about 8.5 miles, as per the description. You can also leave at the 3.5 mile point if you're tired from the hills on that portion.

I'm excited!!!! I'll meet you all at Temescal. For anyone parking in the lot or on the street below, DO NOT leave anything of value in sight or "hidden" under a jacket - LOTS of car break-ins at this trailhead! Spread the word!

Will try this one to get started.

    June 6, 2013

    • Dianne E.

Try this hike. You can always turn around if the gain is too much for you. It is NOT a 14 mile hike. I know beginners who do the Temescal portion alone. There are some hills, so you can expect those....but they are not too bad.

FYI - you can park for free on Sunset - just check signs to be in the free areas.

There are some areas nearby that you can park for free, but not on Sunset.

The time at the top says 6:45 PM, but I assume that's AM?

    June 7, 2013

  • Carole E.

Thanks for the clarity Jon. I interpreted the distance incorrectly. To return to hiking I don't think 12-14 miles roundtrip is the way to do it! Will change my RSVP. Another time.

    June 7, 2013

    • Dianne E.

Jon is incorrect in his assessment of this hike.
