Saturday, April 11 - Back Bone Trail and Corral Cyn trail to Jim Morrison Cave

Distance: 10 miles total (Out and back)

Total Ascent: 2730 Ft.

Rating: Difficult

Description: Today we'll be hiking to the Jim Morrison Cave. The Doors’ Jim Morrison frequented the cave to find solace from the everyday rock star life he lived out on Sunset Strip. A few of his lyrics can be found in the cave, the inside of which has also been completely painted over and sculpted by others.

This challenging and scenic hike is along the Backbone Trail and Corral Cyn Trail. It offers panoramic ocean, mountain, canyon views and interesting geology. The hike will be a strenuous 10 miles out and back with some meandering.

Carpooling from Santa Clarita Valley :

Meet your leader at Towsley Canyon outside the gate at 6:45AM for a 7:00 AM SHARP departure to the Piuma trailhead , or plan to meet at the trailhead at ~8AM.

Meet at the Piuma Trailhead (Lot 2) at 8:00AM:

Take the 405 Fwy South to 101 Fwy North and exit at Las Virgenes. Turn left on Las Virgenes. Go down Las Virgenes , Look for the Piuma Road and keep driving straight, you'll pass Malibu Canyon Rd on the right and the Piuma Trailhead Lot 2 is just a little further on the right. (See map below).

NOTE: There is a $10 parking fee at lot 2, so bring exact change.

We will leave the trailhead at 8:15AM sharp!!

Bring: Plenty of water (3 liters recommended), electrolytes (e.g. Gatorade). Sunscreen, hat, lunch/ snacks, hiking poles (helpful on the uphill portion), and a camera. Wear layered clothing in case it gets hot or cold. Wear boots with lots of tread.

Adventure Pass: Not required.

Dogs Allowed?: Sorry, Malibu Creek SP does not allow them.
