Beginning/Easy Backpacking Little Jimmy Campground

Been thinking about getting into backpacking or dusting off your old equipment to see if it still works? Here is a good chance to go backpacking with a group of http://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/9/8/6/event_105618822.jpegexperienced backpackers in our local San Gabriel mountains. We will be doing an easy overnight backpacking camping trip on the Pacific Crest trail for 2 Miles to the "Little Jimmy” campground.

Our trek starts at the Islip http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/b/2/0/event_105619232.jpegsaddle parking lot where we pick up the Pacific Crest Trail and follows a well-graded trail climbing through chaparral and then pines to the Little Jimmy Campground, 2.5 miles. Our campsite is nestled in a secluded forest with pit toilets, camp fire pits and near a year-round spring. Little Jimmy sits at over 7,000 feet above sea level, so even in summer expect mild days and cold nights. I expect the weather to be 60-80 degrees during the day and 38 to 48 degrees at night. We will set up “camp” at Little Jimmy then do one or two “day hikes” along the Pacific Crest Trail.
There may be bears in the area so you will need a bear proof container. You need thttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/b/d/e/event_105619422.jpego provide all of your own food/equipment for the weekend. Your backpacking equipment is your responsibility. You need to provide your own tent or share, sleeping bag, backpack, etc. You will be carrying everything you will need in the wilderness for 2 days. You don't have to bring everything on the list. It is simply a guide.

Please RSVP on meetup or email jerryhapp@lycos.com if you are interested, and ask questions. We will help facilitate
carpooling. We will meet at 9AM, Saturday, May 5, at the Islip Saddle parking lot, located on CA Highway 2, 39.6 miles north of I210. Maps will be provided to participants.

The dates are subject to change depending on the weather conditions that weekend.
