Revving up the Santa Cruz Tech Ecosystem: Learning from Boulder

Note: Special Time and Location for this Special Event

Venue — the Atrium at the MAH

Doors open at 5:30 and panel starts at 5:45 (arrive on time —limited seating)

Boulder, Colorado is a thriving ecosystem for startups and technology. Recently, the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce organized a trip to Boulder to learn about the components and interactions that combine to create this hospitable startup environment. The Santa Cruz group included our Mayor and 4 City Councilmembers, the Chancellor and others from UCSC, and private individuals.

There is much to learn from Boulder as a model startup ecosystem. It is great to know that that City and civic organizations are taking strides to understand this and are embracing new ideas. This is our opportunity to hear first-hand what was learned, where the opportunities lie, and understand how we can shape our future.

Join us for a informal panel discussion with members of our community who were on the trip:

  • Hilary Bryant — Mayor of Santa Cruz
  • Art Ramirez — Dean of Baskin School of Engineering UCSC
  • Bill Tysseling — Santa Cruz Chamber
  • Bill Richter — Richter Law Offices
  • David Terrazas — Santa Cruz City Council member
  • Manu Koenig — Civinomics

Last year a person spoke from Austin to the Chamber who tried to explain how Austin changed. I have been part of six start-ups and CEO of three. I also lived in Boulder for three months. There needs to be a patent generating university which is in the top quartile of universities in the countries, ideally the top 10%. Ideally more than one university or college. Motivated work force-it is tough to hire tech type people. I ran a company that started up on Cape Cod. The guys wanted to go when the surf was up. But deliverables on time - a few more million is not possible. I am to stay here, I need to feel that there is a place for me - a tech entrepreneur and I don't feel it yet. Would love to have this conversation in person. Best regards, Helen

I cannot make this meeting, but I am from Boston. Back in the 70s, Boston was not a tech town yet. It is today. Oh, maybe arguably Silicon Valley is more advanced but the ingredients for a tech city are important and it is my hope that Santa Cruz can make the transition. It requires cohesive commitment to change and the build of infrastructure and to be nimble on one's feet - fast to change as needed.

Thanks for pulling this group together. Sounds like this group learned a lot. Curious to know... how can the SC community know what kind of progress is being made post-Boulder? Who's the point person accountable to keep the momentum going? I should have asked this question.

I think that there is no single point person, rather multiple point people that continue to do the work needed to build the ecosystem. As far as information dissemination about the learning from the trip, I believe the Chamber of commerce will come out with something.

Sadly, behind in work today so I'm going to have to bow out.

Any chance we can get a recap posted?

As someone who has lived most of my life in Boulder, CO and is moving to Santa Cruz next week, I really wish I could make this meet up! :)

Unfortunately, the timing is just a little off. I look forward to meeting some of you at a future meet up.
