Hello fellow hikers this week we'll head out to Pasadena for our weekly hike. The San Gabrielino trail, a popular escape for Southland vacationers for a century now, the campgrounds, stream side resorts and hiking trails of the Arroyo are truly “survivors.” Most of the man made structures in the canyon were destroyed during a great storm and flood in 1938, and the section of the Gabrielino Trail that we’ll hike this week was only reopened after the Station Fire in the Angeles National Forest over four years ago.

We might see some of the effects of the fire along the way. . . piles of fallen and charred trees and bridges still under repair. But that doesn’t diminish the beauty of passing historic ruins, being surrounded by gorgeous San Gabriel peaks and following a shaded stream nearly the entire route.

We've done this trail before, but we found a new entrance to the trail that will cut off some or most of the paved road so that we can get to the more interesting & beautiful parts of the trail sooner. Please read the directions carefully to make sure you meet us at the new location.

This will be a round trip of 7 miles out-and-back, with an elevation gain of only a few hundred feet. There will be four or five shallow stream crossings each way that involve either walking across logs (see photo) or fording them if you prefer. While the trail is very flat, anyone uncomfortable with crossing via the logs may want to bring poles or wear tennis shoes that can dry out slightly between crossings and an extra pair of dry socks for the drive home. There will also be a few areas of minor rock scrambling.

We’ll stop for a break and snack at the Paul Little Campground, some benches and shady areas will be available. We will return via the same route.

Easy-to-moderate (for length). Will probably take 3 to 3-1/2 hours depending on how long we stop for our break. Dogs OK on leash.

The first and last mile of the trail is in full sun, so bring plenty of water, sunscreen, some bug repellent, a hat and snacks to share. There are outhouses at the Gould Mesa Campground, about two miles into the hike.

Arroyo/Windsor Exit

From the 210 Arroyo/Windsor exit:

Go North on Windsor to the very end of the street.

Turn Right on Ventura

Turn Left on Casitas

Turn Left on Altadena Drive

Go to the very end of Altadena Drive where it dead ends.

Find street parking where you can, and then walk to the end of the street where Altadena ends and there is a trail entrance. We will stretch there before hitting the trail. Please be aware that this is a residential area, so we need to be respectful and keep our voices low until we get out onto the trail.

Heavy rain Friday evening or Saturday morning will cancel; check this site before you leave for confirmation if you're unsure.
