http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/8/6/4/e/event_111334382.jpegHopefully Hellman’s trails will be dry and open in a few weeks when we venture out Whittier way again April 28 (note: no hike this Sat. 21th). We’ll check the forecast for rain before the hike this time, thanks to Izzy’s heads up about post-precip trail closures, and email everyone with a nearby Plan B if it rains a few days before the hike . . . perhaps Powder Canyon near Schabarum or Monrovia Canyon Park.

The gist of our original post (when we planned to do this on the 14th) is below. In the meantime, there are plenty of great Earth Day options for this weekend listed on Rex Frankel’s “LA Meetup” (http://lameetuphikes.blogspot.com/2012/04/hike-calendar-for-april-17-23-2012.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Lameetuphikes+%28LAmeetuphikes%29) summary and on the Sierra Club’s outings list (http://angeles.sierraclub.org/outingsDB/index.aspx?SearchType=URL&SearchDesc=Outings+Search&Sponsor=asdfasdfasdf%22).

Tucked away in charming Whittier, Hellman Park offers a lot of options in a compact package. This is the Eastern-most part of the land owned by the Puente Hills Habitat Preservation Authority.

We’ll hit at least five trails (http://www.habitatauthority.org/pdf/Sycamore_Hellman%20trails%20map%20color.pdf) in the system, starting with an immediate uphill on Peppergrass, then to Rattlesnake Ridge, down the fun Sycamore Switchback Trail, cross a stream to head east for a break on the flat Dark Canyon trail, shaded by California sycamores and coast live oaks. We’ll take a break at the end of that trail before backtracking up the switchbacks to Rattlesnake, then return to our start via Hellman Trail, with another series of switchbacks near the end because we just can’t get enough of them. Along the way, we’ll get great views of the:

● Downtown LA skyline and ocean to the West and South

● San Gabriels to the North

● The striking Hsi Lai Temple (http://www.hsilai.org/en/index.html) and rest of the park to the East.

For anyone short on time or stamina, there’s a foolproof, easy return to our starting point via the Mariposa Trail before we hit the switchbacks.
