As Chief Marketing & Innovation Officer of the three-time Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils (NHL) and Prudential Center, the state-of-the-art multi-purpose arena located in Newark, N.J., Daniel Cherry III leads the strategy and implementation of the sports and entertainment organization’s marketing, communications and community initiatives. Daniel joined the Devils and Prudential Center in August 2015 with more than 15 years of sports, entertainment and consumer marketing experience working for some of top companies and brands in the industry.
Daniel served as Senior Vice President of Marketing at DIAGEO, where he was responsible for leading the marketing and brand strategy across several spirits categories, totaling over 27 million cases sold and generating over $2.2 billion in annual revenue. His time at Diageo was highlighted by the launch of Ciroc Pineapple, one of the most successful and fastest growing spirit innovations of all-time, with over 1 million cases sold within the product’s first calendar year. He was also behind the successful launch of Smirnoff’s first trademark campaign in over a decade, the launch of Captain Morgan White and Flavors, and the re-launch of Tanqueray’s No. Ten luxury brand, leading to a 30 percent increase in year-over-year growth.
Prior to his work with DIAGEO, Daniel was the Chief Marketing Officer of the New York Cosmos franchise, where he developed the re-launch strategy, commercial and retail business model, and marketing communications plan for the rebirth of the iconic soccer club in 2010. While with the Cosmos, he secured global apparel licensing deals with Umbro and New Era and executed award-winning, global advertising campaigns with soccer legends Pelé, Cobi Jones, Carlos Alberto Torres and Eric Cantona. Daniel also helped establish a $30 million valuation and buyout of the re-launched Cosmos International Soccer Brand.
Daniel also has extensive agency experience and has worked with some of the most innovative companies in the business. He served as Managing Partner & Director of Brand Strategy at Anomaly, regularly named one of Fast Company’s most innovative agencies, working with global brands such as Converse, Umbro, Cole Haan, Budweiser and Motorola to gross annual billings of over $35 million. As a brand strategist at Wieden+Kennedy, Daniel led Nike, the Jordan Brand and ESPN accounts. His work on Nike included the 2007 Grammy-nominated song “Classic” (Better Than I’ve Ever Been) featuring pop stars Kanye West, Nas, Rakim and KRS-One. His passion and expertise in music marketing led to his 2010 selection to the board of the Grammy Foundation.
Before W+K, Daniel was a co-owner of Frank151 Magazine and malbon Brothers Farms (mBF), the advertising and brand consulting division of Frank151 Media Group, where he led branded content, influencer and experiential marketing strategies for a number of iconic lifestyle brands, including Red Bull, Toyota Scion, Nike, glaceáu Vitaminwater, PF Flyers and Ride Snowboards.
Daniel got his start in advertising at Crispin Porter + Bogusky where he successfully helped bring AND 1 Basketball to the forefront of the athletic apparel industry. The breadth of work for the AND 1 brand, which included the groundbreaking "AND 1 Mixtape Series” (a street basketball tour and content platform) landed AND 1 Adweek’s "Guerilla Marketer of the Year" in 2000. He also played a critical role in the development of the anti-tobacco “truth.com” brand, a campaign that has grown to be the most successful teen anti-smoking effort in history.
