Inspired by an article(see this link http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/2011-01-21-sciencepubs21_ST_N.htm ) about people informally getting together to learn and discuss various scientific topics -- gatherings of mostly non-scientists -- I'm on the move to get one going in Richmond.

Interested in attending such social/learning events in the near future?

Well, join this meet-up group. I'm planning to hold the first event in May.

Interested in helping to get this endeavor off the ground?

Well, RSVP for Feb 21st or send an email to SciencePubRVA@gmail.com

Interested in suggesting someone (or yourself) as a future Science Pub RVA speaker?

Send an email to SciencePubRVA@gmail.com with "Science Pub RVA - Speaker" in the subject line. Be sure to include the name of the suggested presenter and the topic on which she/he/you would like to present and lead a disucssion. Please note that the likely format is an informal presentation (without technology and/or powerpoint) for 15 to twenty minutes) followed by a discussion with the attendees/audience.

Please note: This is a planning meeting, not an actual Science Pub. What's the difference?

Well, the big difference is that there will NOT be a science topic and/or presenting speaker on February 21st. Rather, the February meet-up is to discuss and determine some of the parameters of an RVA Science Pub such as location, time and potential topics and speakers.

Based on best practices learned from discussions I've had with organizers of Science Cafes in other communities, I do have a few specific parameters I think we should emulate in our first two or three actual events. However, I think it will be fun to get this endeavor off the ground with the input and energy of a a few like-minded folks.
