What is BioDesign? Come and learn about this successful Stanford University initiative. Over the course of the last fourteen years the BioDesign program has spun-out hundreds of new innovative ventures. Many have gone on to gather resources and grow rapidly, and the programme is closely watched by venture capitalists (http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/blog/biotech/2014/03/stanford-oculeve-16-million-dry-eye-treatment.html). It has also expanded globally into countries such as India, and has an outstanding fellowship program. How is the program designed? How does it leverage knowledge and skills across disciplines such as engineering, business, design and medicine? How might Dundee and its universities learn from this model and replicate parts of it to achieve greater performance in economic development from the health care sector?
We'll be chatting via Skype with Varun Boriah, CEO and Co-Founder of Caydian Sleep, which was spun out of Stanford BioDesign and BioX (http://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2014/09/biodesign-fellows-develop-a-device-for-relieving-night-terrors.html). Varun and his co-founder Richard Rink were fellows in the Stanford BioDesign programme and were given extended residency in order to get the company off the ground. The spinout has been accepted into the StartX (http://startx.stanford.edu/) programme, a student-founded and managed non-profit accelerator near Stanford's campus.
This seminar is open to all and may be of special interest to BioScientists, Clinicians, Engineers, Students, Designers, Executives, Games Developers and even Animators. BioDesign works across disciplines in a unique way to solve problems of unmet needs and to come up with innovations that can impact on society and the economy.
