Application Creation Tools Meetup

  • Sep 14, 2010 · 6:30 PM

Hello All! In the wake of our extremely successful first meetup ever, I'd like to announce our next meetup, dubbed the App Creation Tools Faceoff! Two App Creation Engines Enter! One Exits! In the red corner we have Abraham William who will be demonstrating live the Google App Inventor, and it's untold powers in education and usability! In the blue corner we have, coming direct from Adobe, Ryan Stewart to show Flash, and how Adobe is going to change the way you, application engineers, will write software! Whose creator reigns supreme? Next, on Seattle Android Meetup!

Very informative. Appropriately steered me away from both tools for the time being.

The networking part was very productive for me. The presentations were good too (though, as I expected, not useful for my particular needs ). So overall it was great :-)

Would have liked to see more example apps created with each tool , or some standard app. Twitter client, contact manager, etc. Would have helped us understand what tools could do, rather than just what they look like.

I really appreciate the awesome group that Benn, his co-workers, and F5 have been throwing together. This was a good introduction to two new (ish) technology for Android - Google's App Inventor and Flex/Flash/Air from Adobe for Android.

You know, the first thing I thought when I started working through the examples in the wrox book and noticing all the xml config files was "There has to be some way to use JSFL to extend Flash into a tool that can automate Android app development." It looks like someone at Adobe is already thinking along those same lines. ;)

Thank you guys for the topic feedback. I'll have something fun going for the presentation. :)

App Inventor would be the most interesting - sounds like some of the invites are starting to go out. Flash sounds interesting also but isn't that "future" also?

I am most interested in GPS, 3rd Party APIs and database integration. i.e. Checking GPS coordinates against a web database and overlaying this on Google Maps. Can't wait!

Does anybody have any particular areas of App Inventor they are interested in hearing about? Or types of application features App Inventor help out with?
