Meetup details changed: Seattle Grails/Groovy Users Group February Meetup
Friday, January 15, 2010 9:03 AM
Hey all ,
Last nights meeting was scarce but still good. Short on projects but got to demo the Griffon app that I put together and show how easy it is to use Griffon to build Swing/SWT/JavaFX apps the same way you would build grails apps... with easily 1/3 the code of a normal grails app.
The project is still 0.2 (with a recent 0.2.1 release and a 0.3BETA release) but as I have found out, if you can't do anything in groovy, you can usually tack on Java syntax to solve any problem and it works just fine.
For those interested in knowing more about Griffon, check out the blog of it's maintainer (and the guy writing soon to be released book on it)<a href=http://www.jroller.com/aalmiray/</a>.
Also, two additional invaluable resources are...
- <a href=http://xircles.codehaus.org/projects/griffon/lists>Griffon Mailing Lists</a>
- <a href=http://manning.com/almiray/>Griffon in action (prerelease copy)</a>
Keep in mind the book is still being edited and not everything is 100% accurate as versions change but it is a great primer while trying to learn.
We also had some great conversations about Hadoop/CouchDB and people looking to the local Seattle Groovy/Grails User Group for potential hiring.
Seattle already has a huge Java community and there is no reason why we can't turn this into a large Groovy/Grails culture as well.
Also of note, Groovy jumped 10 notches on the Tiobe index in the last 2 months... GO GROOVY! :)
Hope to see more of you next month and if anyone has any questions on Griffon, feel free to ask and I may be able to help.
