Seattle Scalability Meetup - Agile Data & Apache Tez

Details

This meetup focuses on Scalability and technologies to enable handling large amounts of data: Hadoop, HBase, distributed NoSQL databases, and more!

There's not only a focus on technology, but also everything surrounding it including operations, management, business use cases, and more.

We've had great success in the past, and are growing quickly! Previous guests were from Twitter, LinkedIn, Amazon, Cloudant, Microsoft, 10gen/MongoDB, and more.

This month's guests:

Russell Jurney, author, Agile Data

Russell will present about rapidly prototyping analytics applications using the Hadoop stack to return to agility in light of the ever deepening analytics stack. The presentation uses Hadoop, Pig, NoSQL stores and lightweight web frameworks to rapidly connect end-users to real insights. Topics covered include writing User Defined Functions in Pig and publishing insights mined on Hadoop to NoSQL stores like MongoDB, HBase, and Cassandra, and using Python, Ruby, JRuby and Node.js to present data mined on Hadoop in a web browser.

Gunter Hagleitner, Architect, Hortonworks: Apache Tez

Tez is an effort to develop a generic application framework which can be used to process arbitrarily complex data-processing tasks and also a re-usable set of data-processing primitives which can be used by other projects. By providing a more expressive DAG of tasks for a job, Tez attempts to provide significantly enhanced data-processing capabilities for projects like Apache Pig, Apache Hive, Cascading etc.

Gunther Hagleitner has been contributing to various hadoop projects for over four years both at Yahoo! as well as Hortonworks. He is a PMC member of the Apache Tez project. Before Hadoop, Gunther has been working on database technology for more than a decade. At Hortonworks he is leading Hive efforts in the Stinger project.

Our format is flexible: We usually have 2 speakers who talk for ~30 minutes each and then do Q+A plus discussion (about 45 minutes each talk) finish by 8:45.

There'll be beer afterwards, of course!
