Seattle Hadoop / Scalability / NoSQL Meetup: Beyond MapReduce
Details
This meetup focuses on Scalability and technologies to enable handling large amounts of data: Hadoop, HBase, distributed NoSQL databases, and more!
There's not only a focus on technology, but also everything surrounding it including operations, management, business use cases, and more. We've had great success in the past, and are growing quickly!
This month's guests:
Steve Lewis, Systems Biology: Protenomics and Hadoop
In recent years the use of mass spectrometry has revolutionized the analysis of proteins. The analysis involves digesting a collection of proteins into smaller strings of amino acids, separating the strings and running the strings through a two stage mass spectrometer.
Typical experiments may involve tens of thousands of measured spectra compared to millions of possible fragments.
This talk discusses mapping the search into a series of Hadoop jobs and how appropriate selection of key value pairs in each of several jobs can implement and speed up the search.
Mike Miller, Cloudant: Beyond the Event Horizon: what's coming after Hadoop
Inspired by the Google, MapReduce and Hadoop have exploded as "The Tool" for big data. Interestingly, Google no longer uses MapReduce to build their index of the web. We'll present a brief overview of new tools emerging for (1) incremental analytics (2) ad-hoc analytics and (3) dealing with highly-connected content.
