My first crochet project, that I kept, was a belt made of string (from the hardware store) and black mercerized cotton thread. It took a week of wall-time, I think.
Funny story...I broke a desk lamp's glass shade, and decided to replace the shade rather than the whole lamp. But the shade wasn't a replaceable type! So I tried sewing some fabric; it looked like a covered wagon. What I wanted was something fancier, so I thought "I wonder how you make lace?" I learned to crochet, and then to knit...but that lamp still doesn't have a cover!
I like to knit on the bus, but as for where the group could meet...I live near Roosevelt and 65th, so the Wayward Cafe looks like a good choice for me!
I've been knitting for...4 years? Crocheting for one year longer. I generally make gloves and socks, and with crochet I usually do amigurumi.
