Late-breaking Update: Seattle to Portland Yarn Train Event - Cancelled for Tomorrow due to weather

Updated 20 January 2012, Friday, 10:23am
Hello Knit Friends,

When Mother Nature speaks, whether a whisper or a roar, we all listen don't we? And if we do not, it is to our peril.

After months of work and planning, it is with great disappointment that I am writing to tell you that after we weighed all the options and concerns in association with the terrible weather that we've been experiencing in the Seattle area, we are cancelling the Seattle to Portland Yarn train event tomorrow.

The issues we considered were:
• Flood watch in effect, most flooding is 45 miles south of Portland (http://www.weather.com/outlook/weather-news/news/articles/major-flooding-western-oregon_2012-01-19 )
• Amtrak has cancelled service between Seattle and Portland yesterday and today, and there is no guarantee that they will run tomorrow. The are not guaranteeing replacement chartered bus service as trees down is making passage difficult between Seattle and Portland.
• Hotels require 24 cancellation to give a refund, which means this decision needed to be made a communicated as soon as possible this morning.
• Several people are coming from a distance and planning to be in Seattle today, which means they need to know go/no go asap.

Please contact Amtrak (and your hotel) immediately to cancel or change your tickets. We have informed the Yarn Shop owners and will be following up with them via phone as soon as possible.

Will there be a re-scheduling of the Yarn Train?
We have successfully "yarn-trained" six times in January. However, should the event carry on, it will not be Winter. We post follow up information for a possible future event on the Snohomish Knitters Guild site and the Seattle to Portland Yarn train Ravelry forum.

How do I get my bag that I purchased?
We will follow up with details about how to pick up the bag you ordered as soon as we work out the logistics.

Please spread the word, call your friends to ensure that they know we've cancelled this event.

I am so disappointed, and I am sure you are too. Hopefully we'll meet again soon,

Charisa Martin Cairn and Mo Galbreath

What is this Seattle to Portland Yarn Train?
The Seattle to Portland Yarn Train started as a small knit group's day trip to Portland to search for yarn and books. It has grown into a tour of 225+ folks that are up for a fun-filled day-long adventure of knitting and shopping. This event is sponsored by the Snohomish Knitters Guild.

You'll have 3 hours to knit on the train with a load of other knitters. We arrive in Portland around 11am, in the Pearl district, where three shops are waiting to welcome us. All within walking distance. In addition to the wonderful yarn stores, there are many delights in the Pearl district. Be sure to check out Powell's bookstore. After spending about 6 hours in the Portland Pearl district, it's time to head back to the train station and head home (unless you decide to do an overnighter), for another 3 hours of quality knitting time!
