  • Bullock Permaculture Homestead

[06/29]

ONLY TWO PEOPLE ARE CONFIRMED FOR JULY 5 SHORT VISIT

*** Just because you have expressed interest, does NOT mean you are going. ***

BPH only takes 5 people per weekend Short Visit. They already have two. We have two confirmed and two uncomfirmed. If you want to go you must send Bruce H a message and work with him directly. Click on his name down below and look for contact info.

*** DO NOT show up with gear expecting a weekend visit w/o talking to Bruce first ***

If you want to go to the[masked]-Hr 1pm Tour, you must look for that separate meetup thread for details.

[06/22]

SHORT VISIT

A 2 or 3 night stay on the farm. You work side by side with your hosts; could be cleaning, weeding, harvesting, fixing, building...whatever they need and you can do. You camp in your own tents and take your meals with your hosts. Expect a fair amount of work (not 1-2 hours in the garden...this is a working farm, folks), but lots of learning to be had.
- Available Dates: June 28 to July 1, July 5 to July 8 (4 or 5 spots), wknds Aug 23 thru Oct
- Limit 6 people per wknd
- $10/person/day
- Bullock's Permaculture Homestead supplies tools/gloves/etc
- You bring tent/sleeping gear/work clothes/rain-uv hat & sun screen/water bottle, etc
- You don't need to supply silverware/plates/cups/food/etc.
- Expect solar showers & outhouses
- Solar powered charging stations are available if necessary.*
- No pets

*These are not reliably regulated stations. They might be hard on your equipment. They are not meant to power much more than ipads and phones. BPH is not responsible for any damage to equipment hooked up to the chargers. Phone reception is poor & spotty, anyway.

The farm was a jewel of a place. I returned tired and sore, but found myself in my own garden - full to the brim with creative ideas and fearlessness. Thanks for the vision of beauty, function and evolution. I want to go back!

Hiya "Short visit" people for this weekend. I live on the north end of town - any carpool potential? I can drive or join in the gas and fees if you want to. I'm really looking forward to this!

Mary, I don't have a clear picture of the duration of work, arrival-departure times that are a part of the visit, do you? any details would be appreciated------==bruce

Hi Bruce, it sounds like driving separate would work better. I too don't know what to expect, I imagine lots of weeding ---- in the most beautiful garden. I hope you do decide to go. It would be nice to connect with another Seattle permaculture person. Mary Kachi

Laura is going to start a dedicated 07/07 Tour thread to help clear away the fog of this thread.

I'll stop mucking about the date and let this thread expire the holiday weekend; allowing Bruce and anyone else to sort out their Short Visit or pose questions.

I'm tentatively interested in a Short Visit after the BPH's class period. Beginning better informed and with specific dates it should be much less confusing for interested parties.

Thank you for your patience. I hope you all get an opportunity to visit Bullock Permaculture Homestead.

Randy, this sounds great! I'm planning to get to the ferry early, just so we don't miss it. Do you want to create a new Meetup exclusively for the 7/7 date or shall I? I think this will encourage folks to sign up so we reach the 15 threshold.

TOUR: Sunday 07/07, 12:30pm Ferry Departure
    Laura + 1
    Saffron I
    Randy E
    ? Others ?

It's $150/group, whether 1 person or 10 go. Ergo, we certainly prefer six more warm bodies. More than 10 is fine @ $15/ea after 10 people.

There's another small group that hasn't confirmed for the 7th, much less am or pm. If they confirm *and* for the early pm, we can roll in together to better split the cost.

**BPH is having a 1pm potluck that they invited us to. We can attend the potluck (meet lots-o-people), then go on the 3-hr tour. No extra charge, though we'd each need to bring a little something...organically themed. **What's your opinion?**

**Please, get back to me so I can send them one email for the lot of us.

**Keep in mind that I may have to send them a $150 check before we go. If you're not certain, it's best to tell me at least that much.

    'Talked to Julia at BHP:

    SHORT VISIT: 07/05-08
    Bruce H
    Mary Kachi C.
? Howard L ? -please post intention, others may want to go
? Ross H ? -please post intention, others may want to go

Please, contact each other to determine if your intended arrival/departure times allow for ride-sharing. There is no public transport on the island, but there may be two taxi services (bottom this post). Hitchhiking sometimes works. Remember the Orcas Island ferry schedule and that it's the July 4th wknd!!

Each resulting individual group needs to send an email to the below address specifying your intended arrival/departure dates. Review elsewhere in this (l-o-n-g) thread about what not/to bring; e.g., no animals, kitchenware/yes tent, sleeping gear, gardening & rain gear, etc.

Shannon: yes, I think that's the thing to do; separate this meetup based on date and type of visit. I left a vm w/BPH and will call again tomorrow to confirm room for what we have so far; to find out how many spaces may be left after.

With that, wiser, we can start a new thread(s) accordingly, for late Aug - Oct.

    Meanwhile:

    - Tour: 07/07 - possibly four people
    * Laura + 1, Saffron & I

    - Visit: 07/05-08 - possibly two people
    * Bruce & Mary K likely

I understand Howard & Ross want a short visit. Can you make the holiday wknd?

I understand Shannon can't do a Tour on the 7th, but what about Suzanne?

If your name isn't included...it's because I haven't heard from you clear.

Hi, I was interested in the 3 hour tour but can't go on the 7th. I think I'd rather look into a several day stay in Sept or Oct if anyone is interested in that. Maybe we can start another meetup for that later this summer. Thanks for all your work on this!

    June 26, 2013

  • Laura S.

So are we actually firming up a 3-hour tour for Sun, July 7th? If so, let me know so I can spread the date and time far and wide. Perhaps we would also create a new Meetup event specific to this 7/7 tour?

something came up and I can't do a short visit for a bit. I'm personally doing a 3-hr tour, hopefully on Sunday the 7th.

Meanwhile, i can help coordinate others' tours & short visits.

The wknd of the 5th is looking good. My schedule recently dramatically changed. I can only manage a tour, for now. I'll help sort out a visit for you, Mary & Bruce H, though. maybe you all can talk about possible ride-sharing. I think Ross Heidebrecht and Howard L were interested in a wknd, too.

      June 25, 2013

Can we bring a friendly dog? I was planning on 2 nights with one at Doe Bay so I could do the extra night at the Bullocks instead. Is anyone else interested in Kayaking or hot tubbing at Doe Bay?

    June 6, 2013

    • Howard L

I wanted to spend one of those three days playing on the island. It looks like Friday would be a travel day with a little orientation and work, Saturday a full day and Sunday mostly a travel day. I could play that day if that works for you and the Bullocks.

    - Two Types of Visits: 3-hr Tour OR 2-3 night (working) Short Visit
    - Which type of visit and which dates *can't* you do?
    - Tours are $150, whether solo or in a group of 10
    - Tours can be during wkd of July 5-8 & any wk/wknd Aug 23 thru Oct
    - Short Visits are $10/day/person: limit 6 people/wknd
    - Short Visits are 2-3 nights b/t Fri & Mon

    Short Visit
    - Jan, her guest & I are going this wknd for a Short Visit: Jun 29-Jul 1; leaving 3 spots. Need to know asap.
    - If Bruce, Mary & guest want the July 5-8 Short Visit that leaves 1 or two spots. Need to know asap.
    - Next short visits aren't available until wknds of Aug 23 - Oct

    Tour
    - Saffron and Laura & guest want a 1 day tour.

    I need to hear from:
Laura+1 & Saffron Tour: what dates can't you do it?

Howard & Ross Short Visit: which avail wknd, which nights

Bryan, Aaron, Liam+1, Michael+1, Megan, Shannon & Suzanne - Short Visit or Tour & When can't you do it?

    June 24, 2013

    • Laura S.

Yay, Randy! Laura here - I would prefer Sundays, and cannot attend the weekend of Aug 23. Other than that, I'm totally open. Still +1, but I bet I could drum up several more attendees.

Suzanna: you mean to say, a 3-hr Tour on either Fri or Sat afternoon/Evenings in Aug or Oct...maybe Sept?

      June 25, 2013

  • Bruce H.

I meant to say I would be leaving Seattle early Thurs, July 4, not the 5th.

    June 19, 2013

  • Bruce H.

It would be helpful when details emerge to post a gathering time on the first of the three days (assuming that's Fri July 5) so we know how to plan around ferries and estimate travel times from Seattle. I expect that there will be delays at the ferry terminals this busy weekend, anybody familiar with Island travel know what to expect. Also, there might be shorter lines traveling as a pedestrian but then we would need to organize transportation once on Orcas.

I am still in for the 3 day trip but will be stopping to visit a friend on Lopez so could only carpool with somebody (from U-District) wanting to leave early on Friday AM (one passenger seat available).

    June 19, 2013

I'm having trouble communicating with Bullock. If I can't convince them to phone me to clear things up I'll change this to a 3-hr tour on Saturday, July 6th.

A group of 1-10 people is $150; whether it's one body or 10. Every body after that is $15/ea.

    More as I know it.

    June 12, 2013

  • Bruce H.

I am definitely in for the three days. I may be making stops to visit friends both ways so would like to car pol may have to solo.

    June 7, 2013

  • Laura S.

I only want a day tour; does that mean we will be touring the same weekend (July 5th-7th) that you 3-day visitors will be there?

It's possible, yes. One of my questions was 'minimum number' for their 3-hr visit. I'll let you know as soon as I know.

'was hoping to hear back from them to help sort out a couple details for everyone. meanwhile, how about tentatively:

    Overnight: July 6-7

People will need their own tents/gear. We eat with our hosts. We can set up carpools. (I'm coming from south Shoreline with room for 3 more and gear. I'm guessing we'll need to get there fairly early Sat and leave late afternoon Sunday.

    June 3, 2013

  • Howard L

I did this about 20 years ago. I am certain things have changed a lot but it started out maybe as a "skill building" workshop and then I stayed on after for a night or two. I don't remember if I slept in a barn or a tent that time. I would probably park my car in Anacortes (I have a spot) and ride my bike to the ferry. I recall a hilly narrow road to the site. I would like to ask someone to carry a small backpack for me if they are driving. I could carry it by bike if I needed to.

Overnight it is, then! I put several questions to Bullock Farms so we know what to expect: group size limits, expected schedule, gear requirements, recommended donation/person, etc. Meanwhile, they told me:

"The only dates that are totally off limits at this point for either a tour or short visit are July 14th to August 9th, as we are running our Permaculture Design Course during that time. For tours, we can schedule them most days, and for short visits we only accept folks Fri-Mon."

I'm guessing our time will look similar to their 'skill building' schedule. It sounds like one or two people have done this before...input?
