Trip Plans and safety

With my work keeping me out of the country about 2 weeks per month, I am not as engaged as I have been in the past. I have noticed that attendance at the skills sessions has been lower than I'd expect, Bob offers a great deal of knowledge, get out there join him and learn.


Trip Planning, while I tend to be pretty hands off with the group, I have been getting feedback about trips that have had what I'd consider to be indequate trip planning and higher safety risks as a result.


With that in mind, I'm sending this email. Our Organizers owe it to the members to do an adequate job of planning to host a safe trip, our members owe themselves the responsibility of reviewing and comprehending the information and acting on it, they also need to notify me if they feel that a trip is not being planned or conducted appropriately. After all, it's important that the trips are safe as well as fun.



Must Have

Route Information minimum Launch and return times/dates, Launch and Destination point and names of channels for any crossings over ½ mile.

Current flow times and velocities for the area. Keep in mind that while tides generate the currents, that tide tables aren't very good substitutes for current tables (hint high tide and low tide are roughly related to slack current, while half way is near max). I like the Xtides program and the University of North Carolina runs it on a server you can access. The NOAA site works nicely as well. Canada keeps its data more locked up, so most sites charge for that.

NOAA wind forecasts should be added a few days before the event.

Equipment Requirements listed: Kayak, paddle, pfd, paddlefloat, pump, sprayskirt, headlamp, charts, navigation gear (compass/gps/??)vhf radio (edit as needed).

Route classification for (use the UW Kayak club rankings, so we're consistent, if you have better ones, let me know and we'll change).

If you're doing a river trip such as eagle watching on the Skagit, add the CFS or CFM readings that the trip cancels at, then list actuals the week of the trip.

Skills required – any trip rated beyond SK requires demonstrated self rescue skills

Overnight trip or day trip.

Expected rough costs – if ferry, walk on or drive on, launch access fees, camping fees, etc.

Organizers contact information – makes it easier to ask questions or find each other.

Any other information deemed needed.


Good/nice to Have

Availability of drinking water.

Parking and/or carpool information

Approach to meals defined, group versus individual, any shared gear (stoves/fuel, pots, dishes, etc.)

Camping conditions if applicable (campsites with picnic tables, toilets or primitive, etc)

Listing of other loaner or shared equipment

safety tips.

A document with captureed images of the charts for the route and other info uploaded to the groups meetup file site, I have about a dozen docs posted there and will put a trip planning template.


Please make sure that future trip plans address these requirements.

Keep you RSVP's up to date, it's tough for people to plan a trip when they don't really know who is going.
