Thanks for checking out Seattle Flickrites, a social networking group dedicated to two of our passions: photography, and the sense of community we get from Flickr.
WHO JOINS FLICKRITES?
We have a diverse group of people from all walks of life and all parts of the Puget Sound region. Amateurs, pros, young and old, the wild and the shy all come out to join us. Ages 13-65?they're there!
If you join this group you should also be a member of Flickr.com and join our group there, Seattle Flickr Meetups (http://www.flickr.com....
There are some fees associated with this group, and your contributions to help defray the costs are greatly appreciated. Please follow the link below to contribute.
WHEN AND WHERE WE MEET
We have a minimum of two "official" meetups per month: an all-ages photostroll and an adult-oriented social night - where you will also find cameras and lots of photography action. Our photostrolls are on the third Saturday afternoon of each month, and generally start at 1 pm. We rotate venues and neighborhoods to keep it interesting. Our "Brews & Views" social nights are in local bars, lounges and pubs, held on the last Thursday of the month at 7 pm.
Since we know our members have diverse interests and ideas they also can sponsor events. If you see a MSE posted on our calendar, be aware that while it's not an official Flickrites event, it'll likely be a lot of fun! To learn how to host your own MSE take a look at this thread on the discussion board.
- Look for a return of classes or seminars - if you are interested in leading a class, please let us know!
- We are looking at ways to offer smaller meetups. As the photostrolls and Brews & Views increase in size we know some of you are looking for alternatives
This is just the start?. stay tuned for more! WHAT WE DO
Originally we just got together for food, drinks and socializing. But in December 2005, we kicked off our first photostroll and it started a trend. We'll walk a neighborhood or area of interest, then get together for drinks and dinner afterward?later, everyone's shots are posted to Flickr
. Sometimes photostrolls become "photohikes" and combine photography with the amazing outdoors surrounding Seattle. We've also done one "PhotoShoe" event, where we snowshoed at Stevens Pass.
Additionally, for those of you who prefer not to stroll or want a more adult event, each month we have a Brews & Views social meetup for adults to get together, eat and drink. OUR HISTORY
Seattle Flickrites started with three people (Flickr members Weave, GustavoG and Striatic) as part of the "Striatic Does America" tour in July 2005 and within three months grew to become the largest Flickr meetup group (although San Francisco was a tad larger before they went indy on us
). Our own GustavoG is a Flickr icon (no, not the graphical kind) and creates those amazing computer-generated relationship charts that became all the rage with Flickr management.
We currently have (January 2008) 800+ members here on Meetup with over 600 on the mailing list. Of those we estimate that around 300 are very active - attending one or more events per quarter. HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE "FLICKRITES"?
You know, "Flicker-ites"?.like Seattleites, only flickering.WHO DO I ASK IF I HAVE A QUESTION?
Feel free to send mail via Meetup or Flickr to any of the organizers or you can email us all by sending mail to organizers - at - flickrites.comWHAT IF I CAN'T MAKE A PREPAID EVENT?
If you RSVP "Yes" for a prepaid event, such as a class or a bus tour, unfortunately we cannot provide refunds, because we have committed our personal money to hold or purchase equipment or food. Costs get incurred whether or not you attend, and we rent gear, rooms, etc. based on the people who have committed with a Yes RSVP. PLEASE consider and make absolutely sure before you RSVP Yes for these events?once you have, we cannot refund the event fee.WHAT IF I'M A LITTLE SHY?
You're not the only one?but don't worry, we have many socially-skilled people who will chat you up, at length if you let them! Our group is very welcoming, laid-back and friendly. Judgment and cliquishness are not what you'd find at a Flickrites meetup.WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN US
We really have a great group of people. Yes lots of groups say that but it is really true here. People will go out of their way to introduce themselves and welcome you. The more advanced photographers in the group are happy to share what they know with those learning. One of the great things about this group is that you see skill levels improve dramatically just from the sharing and camaraderie that goes on here.
Some of our members have access to suppliers and sometimes can arrange group (read discounted) buys on equipment. We have some members who are great on DIY techniques and you'll often see MSEs covering the current topic of interest.
This is a real community - people like each other and care about each other! We've had one marriage, (perhaps more on the way?), people from the group gather for other social activities such as dinners and parties, people help each other move. Although the focus is on photography the group has come to mean a lot more to many. New to Seattle?
This is a great excuse to get out and meet others. Want to learn more about your camera?
You're bound to at a meetup. Just wanna grab a beer and have a little conversation?
Oh yeah, that definitely happens, too!
