Designing without pants: lessons on work from WordPress.com

Would you like to work somewhere with no meetings, no email and that let you work from any city in the world you wished? Berkun worked as a manager at WordPress.com, one of the largest 100% distributed companies in the world where these perks are true, and more. He led a team of programers and designers and wrote a new book about the challenging experience called The Year Without Pants: WordPress.com and the Future of Work. How can a team distributed in space and time be effective? What is the role of a designer in a culture that insists on autonomy? What lessons can leaders of any design team learn from how WordPress.com works? He'll answer these questions and more.

Bio: Berkun is the best-selling author of Making Things Happen, The Myths of Innovation, Confessions of a Public Speaker, and Mindfire: Big Ideas for Curious Minds. He worked at Microsoft from 1994 to 2003 on Internet Explorer 1.0 to 5.0, Windows, and MSN, and as team lead at WordPress.com from 2010 to 2012. He now works full time as an author and speaker and his work has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Wired Magazine, Forbes, the Economist and other media. He has contributed to Harvard Business Review and BusinessWeek, and appears frequently on CNBC, MSNBC, CNN, and NPR for his expertise on various subjects. His many popular blog posts and lectures can be found at http://www.scottberkun.com/ and he tweets at @berkun.

Checking in. I'm downstairs at Piecora's watching the USA v Mexico World Cup qualifier. We are up 1 - 0! If anyone wants to join me for the last 20 min, I am in the middle booth directly in front of the TV.

That email goes out to the entire waiting list. It is first come first serve when a spot opens (we cannot change that, unfortunately).

Hi folks. Hope to see you in a few hours. I'll have copies of some of my earlier books to give away during Q&A (I don't have copies of YWOP yet!) Also, if you're interested in the book, there's this amazing short film we made for the book, shot entirely here in Seattle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Jjv2fm7CMgE

I am on the waiting list but would like to meet a great UX designer for a[masked] hour project over the next several months...we are not a startup and it is a cool tool we are building. www.portent.com
