Virtual WordPress Docs Sprint

Virtual WordPress Docs Sprint

Details

What We're Working On

This month, we'll be working on adding to, and improving, the WordPress Theme Developer Handbook (http://make.wordpress.org/docs/theme-developer-handbook/) and the WordPress Plugin Developer Handbook (http://make.wordpress.org/docs/plugin-developer-handbook/).

These handbooks aim to teach developers most everything they’d need to know to create a WordPress theme or plugin.

Both handbooks are under active development, but are currently in draft form, and will be comprised of both existing Codex documentation and new articles written from scratch.

If you’ve considered contributing to WordPress, helping with WordPress documentation is a great way to learn WordPress and give back to the WP community.

We need help:

editing, taking and editing screenshots, preparing code snippets and examples, writing tutorials, etc. We’d love to have your help, so if you’re interested, please review the following documents beforehand to help get you up to speed.

WordPress Theme Developer Handbook (http://make.wordpress.org/docs/theme-developer-handbook/) WordPress Plugin Developer Handbook (http://make.wordpress.org/docs/plugin-developer-handbook/) WordPress Style Guide (http://make.wordpress.org/docs/handbook/references/handbooks-style-and-formatting-guide/) Handbook Tutorial Template (http://make.wordpress.org/docs/handbook/templates/tutorial-template/) - a starter template with typical sections in a tutorial doc. Tutorial Example

Where possible (and relevant) please write things as a tutorial, as opposed to just explanation. This Child Themes page (http://make.wordpress.org/docs/theme-developer-handbook/advanced-theme-topics/child-themes/) is a good example.

This tutoria (http://make.wordpress.org/docs/theme-developer-handbook/advanced-theme-topics/child-themes/)l opens by explaining child themes and is followed by a tutorial about how to create one. This helps users understand and gives them practical steps to follow.
