Based on the large number of cancellations, I'm also cancelling. So far, only Reid has actually confirmed that he will attend. If you do attend, you can reach Reid at 202-345-2565. He wants to get in as many miles as he can, so he'll be getting an early start on Saturday so he can ride as many trails as possible.

The Tour de Chesapeake is a well-organized weekend cycling festival in Mathews County on Virginia’s Middle Peninsula. It's aimed at regular cyclists of all ages and families too. This is not a hardbody race or a competition. Participants ride for the fresh air, great scenery, and good company of other recreational bikers.
Although the main attraction of the festival is cycling at your own pace on the designated bike routes in Mathews, the town opens itself up for many other activities in a special effort to attract visitors.
The supported bike rides on five different routes range from 21 to 24 miles each, and last all day on Saturday. You can ride as many of the cycling routes as you want. There are many biking and other fun activities planned for both Saturday and Sunday, including live music, an art show, and a seafood dinner prepared by locals.

Full details, photos, riding routes, costs, and information on accommodations for the May 2012 Tour de Chesapeake can be found below. Although complete details for the 2013 Tour are not yet posted, the weekend schedule of activities should be much the same as 2012.
Last year, the registration fee was $30 before April 19 and $40 thereafter. The fee includes route guides, SAG support, hot showers, and FREE camping on the grounds of Thomas Hunter Middle School in a "Tent City". There are many additional options for house rentals, B&B's, home sharing, and hotels in Gloucester about 17 miles away.
The general plan is for people to arrive Friday evening, bike and hang out on Saturday, and do more of the same on Sunday. We might also be able to kayak if the weather and our energy levels cooperate. You don't need to join us on the bike ride since there will be other things going in town to keep festival attendees entertained. Driving around to enjoy the scenic roads in Mathews County is also fun.

For those who aren't familiar with Mathews County, it's a wonderful weekend getaway destination featuring flat roads for biking, little traffic, plenty of waterside views of the Chesapeake Bay, a relaxed county lifestyle, and great kayaking too.
People are friendly and wave at you. Several SHR members went to Mathews last June, and had a terrific weekend of kayaking, relaxing together, enjoying the countryside, and attending Donk's Lil' Ole Opry music show at the local theater. We hope to go back for more kayaking, biking, relaxing, and good times this year.
