Please join us as we revisit some of the great works of literature that were the bane of our school existence, and discover for ourselves why these are truly considered 'classics." No pressure, no tests, no papers due by Monday. Ugh! Just some great books and casual, animated discussion. And perhaps some scones...
I actually got the idea for this Meetup quite a while ago.
Fifteen years after graduating college, after coming to the realization that I could no longer put off cleaning out the attic, because my collectibles (aka “junk”) were becoming self-aware, I happened to chance upon one of my old "Norton Anthologies." More specifically, a dog-eared, marked-up with neon pink highlighter version of "Madame Bovary," and decided to reread it, just for the heck of it. (Thus, successfully managing to put off the attic for yet another day. Score one for the home team!)
I was surprised by the emotions the story stirred in me. I suppose putting a few miles under my life perspective “belt” helped me to gain some insight that I didn't have as a teenager. Plus, I didn't have the stress of a pending exam to distract me from the story, which made an enormous difference in my attitude, and how I approached the book.
I then went back and reread other instructor-assigned classics, such as "Silas Marner," "Candide," "The Scarlet Letter," "The Scarlet Pimpernel," "Gulliver's Travels," etc., and this time around, discovered that I thoroughly enjoyed them all. I even started a list serve book club to see if anyone else out was of like mind, and much to my delight, we had quite a few takers.
So now I would like to take this a step further and schedule some actual get-togethers, perhaps once a month or so, and supplement with some on-line chatting for those who can't make the physical meetings.
So, read the book, peruse the Cliff Notes©, watch the movie adaption, listen to the General Mills Radio Adventure Theater abridged rendition, or if you prefer, do none of the above, and just simply come to gab!
Oh, and please understand that we're just starting out right now, and "putting out the feelers” as to level of interest, dates, locations, etc., so sugggestions are encouraged and appreciated. Although, admittedly, Darcye and I are partial to coffee houses and tea rooms. I mean, sure, libraries are fine for meeting up, I suppose, but supplemental snacks are even better!
