First Universalists Again Join Secular Bible Study to Explore The Bible!

At the heart of the debate over homosexuality and Christian Ethics is The Big Question: "What does The Bible say -- or NOT say -- about homosexuality?"

To approach this question, 1stU-SBS attendees, guided by Speaker-Moderator John Gustav-Wrathall, Adjunct Professor of United Theological Seminary and a same-sex married, excommunicated gay Mormon, will seek the question's historical context -- to more broadly understand biblical sexual ethics, as well as biblical views of gender relations and marriage, both in Old Testament times as well as in the Common (New Testament) Era.

John will also guide 1stU-SBS's inquiry into the broader biblical history of sexuality, addressing the contentious issue of whether, or how, homosexuality was known or understood in the biblical world.

Once 1stU-SBS has explored the historical context of sexuality, we will tackle specific texts of The Bible typically read to concern homosexuality, discussing how their teachings intersect with today's LGBT civil rights movement.

Some questions 1stU-SBS will seek to answer:

1) What were the sexual ethics of ancient cultures and religions? How have less vs. more scholarly Bible translations affected Judaism's and Christianity's consideration of homosexuality?

2) How have biblical, religious and secular attitudes on sexuality, sexual ethics, and homosexuality changed (or not) since pre-biblical society?

3) How have past and modern Christians interpreted Bible passages dealing with homosexual behavior and their judgment of it?

4) How does our modern community express & respond to religious attitudes toward homosexuality and same-sex marriage?

Don't miss SBS's and First Universalist's third Joint Meetup topic on what is claimed as one of the last frontiers of human rights and religious progress: Homosexuality & The Bible! RSVP "YES" today!
