Hike Aiken Canyon

Hi Secular Hikers,

Weather permitting; there will be a hike in Aiken Canyon on Sunday, May 4th. A well-maintained, four-mile-loop hiking trail begins at the entrance. An additional 3/4 mile trail branches off from the loop and makes its way through the canyon. There is a total of 500 ft. elevation gain. About 16 miles south of Colorado Springs, about 20 miles north of highway 50 just off highway 115. I consider this a moderately easy hike. We will carpool from the park-n-ride under Interstate 25 between Tejon and Nevada.

Please note:  No Dogs Allowed.

Please bring enough water and snacks for the hike.  We will most likely stop for a light lunch.  We will be back at the park-n-ride somewhere between mid to late afternoon.

Please let me know if you plan on attending the hike. If you change your mind, please let her know that also.

We will be leaving the park-n-ride between Nevada and Tejon under Interstate 25 at 9:00 AM.

Directions: to Aiken Canyon

From Interstate 25, take highway 115 south about 16 miles to Turkey Canyon Ranch Road (It's located 0.1 mile south of milepost 32.) Turn right (west) and drive 200 yards to the preserve parking area.

p.s.  If this is your first hike with the Secular Hikers or if you have already given more than $0.50 per person per hike you attended or $10.00 within the last year, please ignore this message.

It costs me $72 twice a year to be a meetup organizer.  Would you please consider helping by sharing this expense?  If I receive about $0.50 per person (including guests) per hike or (to avoid a bunch of quarters) $1.00 per person about every other hike you attend, I would come out roughly even.

Most people appeared to enjoy this somewhat easy 5 1/2 mile hike. Seven of us went up to an overlook which added a little over 1/2 mile. The weather was great. I especially enjoyed meeting John Rising (and his girlfriend) on the trail. He is a former assistant hiking leader, a former leader of Pikes Peak Skeptics, the photographer at the wedding of Georgianne and myself, and a very good friend.

We experienced mild to warm conditions on this hike, starting out cloudy and becoming sunny for the second half of the hike.

Much of the trail was quite rocky, and we had lunch by a pile of wood that used to be a cabin.

6.2 miles traversed, per my pedometer, and I also hiked the overlook.

Pictures are in the photos section.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
