I don't often get to read outside my current circle, I'd love to have book ideas and suggestions to further expand my horizons.

One day, I would love to read and discuss a controversial book. The one that immediately comes to mind is Battle Hymn of the the Tiger Mother

Oh, I listened to that on audio book. It left me utterly stunned and after about chapter 3 I didn't want to really listen anymore but I thought it would get better and it just got increasingly incredulous of what she did to her children. What blew me away is she is a lawyer and it is such an incriminating book that her children could in fact sue her for mental damages.

In the end, she changed her ways after her youngest daughter stood up against her and said enough is enough. I had problems reading the book at first and decided to pick it up again one day.
The problem was if she could have continued in her ways she would have. I didn't really feel that she did change. Her daughters had to say they had enough because she was beyond a bully and it even pushed her husband too hard. She was humiliated several times and had she really had changed one would have seen it much earlier in the book - half way maybe? Even her mother had told her that she was too harsh - she listened to no one and justified it by being a good Chinese mother. She rather thought the abuse was justified because others within her culture are known to sometimes be harsh, but this in my opinion was just plain and simple child abuse. I felt the last chapter really wasn't too sincere - rather more self-congratulatory that she had recognized a couple of things.
this is going to sound weird, but it takes me forever to get through books unless they are in audio format. (Gimpy right eye) ha ha ha
If it's a chapter or two a month I might be able to do that but if it is a book a month, I'd have to pass unless on audio book.
