Hello Authors!

Want to publish your writings? Wondering what the best route to take is? You've come to the right place.

The publishing industry has changed dramatically over the past 20 years.  Technology has offered authors an alternative to the traditional publisher-focused options.  Join our group and learn the benefits and tactics of self publishing. Among the many topics covered are how to create your book products (soft cover or eBooks) using a variety of publishing platforms including Create Space, Lightning Source, Amazon Kindle, Smashwords and more.  Marketing is always a hot topic with this group.

Rosemary Augustine formed this group in January 2012. In April 2015, she passed the leadership onto Gary Zenker and the Main Line Writers Group.  Our goal continues to focus on offering attendees information and resources to help them make smarter choices in all steps of the self-publishing process.

Whether you are at the point where you are just considering publishing or you have self-published a dozen or more books, there's always something to be learned from your fellow authors. Please join us for what could be the best two hours you spend a month on your own self-publishing efforts.

We meet on the first Saturday of the month, from 9:30 am to 11:30 am or so. This meetup is $10 per meeting, due at the beginning of the meeting. The money covers a variety of costs including the meetup organizer fees and other group-associated expenses. Please try to bring exact change.

I go to a lot of trouble to communicate all of the meeting information in the emails and the meeting descriptions. There's nothing more frustrating for me as a leader is when I spend all the time to do that (a lot of time) and someone, new or not, sends me an email asking me for information that is covered there - like WHEN is the meeting or WHERE is it held. It's disrespectful of the time I put into running the group. READ THE EMAILS and click through for the EVENT DESCRIPTION FIRST.

You are coming to learn stuff, of course. We all understand that, I run this self-publishing group to help people gain the knowledge they need and achieve their dream of publishing their work, whatever it is. I bring my knowledge of having published over a dozen books, but I am not an expert on everything. Participation by everyone is important, given the different experiences and knowledge of each person.

If only beginners or newbies show up to the group, then the self-fulfilling prophesy is that experienced people are not incented to show up (they have nothing to gain) and the knowledge base will always be limited. My hope is that the members form a relationship with the others that extends outside the monthly meeting and help each other in real ways.

You can help each other by:
   • Reviewing each other's books (and buying them  instead of waiting for copies to be handed to you)

   • Offering help proactively to others and following through

   • Asking what other people need and then offering them help along those lines

If you show up to the meeting thinking "What am I going to get out of this", the answer is "Not as much as if you started with the thought 'How much can I help others achieve their goals?' People who seek to help others invariably find people more willing to help them.

You have a lot of knowledge in general, whether it is about publishing or art or writing; you may know people outside the group who may make good connections for those within the group; you may have a way of thinking and observations that can help others.

If you think that paying the fee (whatever it is) entitles you to just sit there and take whatever you can get out of it, any fee is going to be too high for you.

And if you believe I am raking in the dough from this, I want you to know that after the expenses associated with running and attending the group (which include the Meetup fee, a web hosting fee, name labels, printing of handout materials, a babysitter to cover around 4+ hours of time for traveling to and from the meeting and leading it) , I net between $2 and $4 an hour if I am lucky that week.

My real gain out of this is that I get to be a part of helping people reach their dreams. That, my friends, cannot be measured in dollars and cents. You can share that wealth by participating actively. Thanks!

If you an author also seeking support for your writing, consider joining the Main Line Writers Group meeting in King of Prussia, PA or the Wilmington Writers Group meeting in Wilmington, Delaware. Both groups meet monthly and feature critique six months a year and programming related to the art of writing six times a year. The groups are friendly and welcoming.
