Michael Uschold Presents: Introduction to Ontologies and Semantic Technology
This is a gentle introduction intended for absolute beginners who may first think of cancer when they hear the term 'ontology' or who may think of reproduction when people speak of 'AI'. It is based on a tutorial given at the Semantic Technology Conference in 2007 in San Jose.
We will first describe some common challenges and pain points in today's IT world. This motivates the need for ontologies and semantic technology. But what exactly IS an ontology and how is it used? What's is the difference between an ontology and a vocabulary? a taxonomy? a thesaurus? an XML schema? a data base schema? a UML class diagram. What is the difference between *an* ontology and the branch of philosophy with the same name?
We also consider the question of "semantics". When people say "Semantic X" what do they really mean?
This is intended to be highly informal, if I only get 1/3 the way through because of lively discussion, all is goodness. I will be happy to do followup sessions.
