Have you previously volunteered your time for a cause or do you currently volunteer somewhere on a regular basis? Is there an organization you would like to volunteer for?

I started out working at Literacy KC as a volunteer in November of 2009 and was hired in September to be a Community Advocate for one of their programs called Open Doors. Within that program, we cater to the literacy needs of ex-offenders and/or people on probation or parole. I have recruited many students for the program; and now, we are looking for people who would like to donate three hours per week to tutoring people who otherwise wouldn't know how to read. Surprisingly, 1 out of 5 people can't read in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Our goal is to change that statistic, as we train and match qualified tutors with each student. The student I started with is no longer in the program. After working the same position at his job for 20 years, he came to us, reading at the fourth grade reading level. Now, he reads at the eighth grade reading level and is almost ready to take his GED. If he scores high enough, he will be eligible for a four year scholarship to nursing school!

What skills, hobbies, or interests do you have that could help a non-profit charity? (i.e. construction, photography, website, computers, communications, etc.)

I have been an active volunteer and community advocate for over two years. I work for a nonprofit organization called Literacy Kansas City, which is committed to providing free one-on-one tutoring in the Kansas City area. We teach folks how to read!

What Belinda is saying about this Meetup Group

Serve is an excellent way to meet people. More than this, it is a great way to help people. There is lots to do in the way of assisting others who are in need. It is this type of work that we were primarily put here to do, and it is the most rewarding. I enjoy finding out about some of the possibilities to be a help in our community. For example, I am SO looking forward to visiting the children at the Ronald McDonald house for Halloween this year! This will probably be the most fun I have had on this holiday in a LONG time:) At the same time, I will be putting a smile on someone else's face, namely the face of a child who doesn't know how long he or she has to live on this Earth.
