Last year in October, more than 25,000 people drove more than an hour on dark, narrow, winding roads out to a small farm in rural Dickerson, Maryland. They proceeded to pay to go on a walk through the woods, then spent even more for hayrides, ziplines, and other dimly lit attractions, finally doling out the last of their cash for hamburgers and fresh hot funnel cakes and leaving with big, contented smiles, excited to do it all over the next year (or next weekend).

Why?

MTV has called Markoff’s Haunted Forest the best Halloween attraction on the east coast. It’s consistently rated “Top Haunt” by a variety of reviewers. It’s magnificent, and not just because the bloody chainsaws and rabid wolfmen are so realistic. It’s an amazingly well designed customer experience.

Join us for an exclusive backstage look at the MHF operation. Frankie Abralind, an experience designer at Sibley Hospital, and Ayla Newhouse, a service designer at Capital One, will lead this small group on an interactive evening of on-site analysis and exploration. We’ll start with a tour of the grounds before the sun sets, then attend the pre-open staff meeting, examine the guest experience from the first moment entering the property to the ticket window to the haunted trail entrance, and continuously discuss all aspects of this complicated and wonderful business with our service designers’ hats on.

This meetup will start in the Markoff’s Haunted Forest parking lot at 5pm and end at 9:30pm. Please contact us directly if you’d like to carpool. Tickets to this Safari, which include an official Trail Pass, the “Town Pass,” and plenty of activity tickets, are $65 and limited to the first five RSVPs.

This Magical Service Safari is an experiment. The idea was born during the brainstorming session at the Service Design DC kickoff event. If it's successful, Ayla and Frankie will continue to organize these Safaris a few times a year.
