A little serendipitous - my love of Shakespeare and Persian literature coming together in DC - the same Fall Season that I have put together this Meetup group!
"The Conference of the Birds" - by ATTAR, a 12th century Persian book of mystical poems, is an allegorical rendering of the concepts of Sufism and the quest for spiritual truth. 30 birds get convinced, one by one, by the Hoopoe who is their leader, to go on this quest. The Play is made up of the conversations the Hoopoe has with each bird, trying to alleviate their fears, and enlightening them about the merits of such a journey.
I highly recommend the following translation: "The Conference of the Birds" - translated by Dick Davis.
I thought it would be fun to see this and then maybe go out for food/drinks afterwards. I suggesting buying our own tickets individually, and meeting up at the theater before and after the Play.
"The play is a flying carpet gliding us aloft into a land of mystery, splendor, and ritual."
