Folger Shakespeare Theatre: "The Conference of the Birds"

A little serendipitous - my love of Shakespeare and Persian literature coming together in DC - the same Fall Season that I have put together this Meetup group!
"The Conference of the Birds" - by ATTAR, a 12th century Persian book of mystical poems, is an allegorical rendering of the concepts of Sufism and the quest for spiritual truth. 30 birds get convinced, one by one, by the Hoopoe who is their leader, to go on this quest. The Play is made up of the conversations the Hoopoe has with each bird, trying to alleviate their fears, and enlightening them about the merits of such a journey.

I highly recommend the following translation: "The Conference of the Birds" - translated by Dick Davis.

I thought it would be fun to see this and then maybe go out for food/drinks afterwards. I suggesting buying our own tickets individually, and meeting up at the theater before and after the Play.

"The play is a flying carpet gliding us aloft into a land of mystery, splendor, and ritual."

The Birds take you on a journey of leaving behind the desires of the "self", and to a place of surrender - that catapults them to a higher understanding of an eternal "self." Young, energetic cast of birds!

People have not been able to get tickets - had signed up, and then discovered the performance was sold out. I'll keep my eyes open to see if I hear of cancelations and other availabilities. Thanks! Afsaneh

Afsanah, Thank you for this recommendation. If we get a group together, we can probably get a discounted rate and be seated together. What do you think?

Love the idea! I already have bought mine - but if you could help with this, it would be great! Would you be able to? Thanks!

I'll call the theater tomorrow and post the response. Usually a group of 10 generates a discount....
