Paddle the Roanoke River from Williamston to Jamesville
Hosted by Sierra Club Capital Group
Details
We will put in at the NC Wildlife boat dock Williamston, NC at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 2 (From Williamston, access area located at the south end of US 17 and Roanoke River Bridge, turn left on Willow Drive & a right on River Rd.) We will then paddle 12.28 miles down the Roanoke River by the southern route that goes through the Roanoke River Bottomlands public lands and an area called Devil’s Gut. From there we will connect back with the main Roanoke River channel and paddle the few remaining miles to Jamesville and take out at the boat dock. This is a flat water river section with a slow current and should take about 6 hours of casual paddling. You will need a canoe or kayak, flotation, water, and lunch. There is a participation limit of 6 boats.
To celebrate the trip end, there happens to be a local restaurant called the Cypress Grill at the take out that is only open a few months in the spring. the Cypress Grill is one of the last Roanoke River herring shacks and their specialty is pan fried herring and other local spring running fish with all the fixings. A very casual place as you can see in the web link photos and all are welcome in come as you are attire. http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Overview/2746/cypress-grill
It takes about 3 hours to drive from Raleigh to Williamston so you are welcome to get up early and drive or to camp in the area and meet at the NC Wildlife Boat Ramp in Williamston at 10:00 AM. Green Acres Family Campground is nearby and I will be renting a site. Let me know if you are interested in camping here and we can get some sites together. Sites are $25 a night with $2 per additional person. The official Sierra Club day trip starts at 10:00 AM on April 2. Let me know if you are in a kayak or canoe. Thanks!
