Sierra Club Griffith Park Moonlit Hike

Moderate hike to Mt. Hollywood* (~5 miles RT, 1200 ft elevation gain); potluck on top. No beginners or tigers, please. Leashed well-mannered dogs welcome. Gather at 6:45pm and sign waiver sheets; hike begins at 7pm and lasts around 2 1/2 hours.

*If conditions warrant, leaders may modify destination slightly.

What to bring: Bring water, a light jacket in case it gets cold, and a snack or small dish to share. Hiking boots/shoes are recommended. Flashlights are optional; many leaders discourage their use except in emergencies.

Check the weather

Directions to Merry-Go-Round Lot #2: From Los Feliz Blvd just west of the 5, take Crystal Springs north into the park; you’ll soon pass a freeway onramp. After around a mile, you’ll come to a 4-way intersection, with the Ranger station on your right. Make a left (going west). At the top of the road you’re forced to turn right into the (unlit) lot #1. Drive through the lot and along the road that leaves the opposite corner. You’ll soon come to lot #2, which is lit. The Sierra Club meets at the far (north) end of the lot, by the stone steps.

Going north on the 5 from Downtown LA, you can also get off at the Griffith Park exit and take Crystal Springs going north, following the directions above. Other routes go from near the Zoo or from Travel Town; you can get directions from this GPS link to lot #1, but you still need to drive through to lot #2:

The hike will start at the same place and time, but it looks like leader Felix Martinez will be taking the group to Cedar Grove (AKA the E.T. Forest) tonight because two large groups will be on Mt. Hollywood. (I might not be at tonight’s hike, but a bunch of people should be there. As usual, I’ll send out my cell phone number to new or newish people in case you’re having trouble finding the meeting place.)

Hi, I was planning to bring a group of friends to hike in the evening. I haven't been to Griffith Park in quite awhile. Is there a contact number for someone in the group in case we get lost trying to get there?

Hi Aileen, I’m not sure whether I’ll be able to make it to Friday evening’s hike and potluck, but either way I’ll email you my cell phone number so you can call me if you need directions.

Thanks, Emmy. I think my group won't be able to make it since we may be arriving later and checking out a different trail.
