What we’re about
The Orange-Chatham Group of the Sierra Club focuses on exploring, enjoying, and protecting our part of North Carolina. We serve Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, and Orange counties, an area that includes Burlington, Yanceyville, Siler City, and Chapel Hill, among many other towns and cities. We invite you to join us to explore nature, hear from prominent speakers, and influence policymakers.
One of the Sierra Club's abiding missions is to engage the public. Sierra Club membership is not required or expected to join this Meetup group or to join our posted activities. If you are interested in becoming a Sierra Club member, you can join by clicking here.
If there is an activity you'd like to add, or if you have talents you'd be willing to share, please contact the leaders. We welcome new ideas!

See all- What Kind of Housing Can Make Living In Chapel Hill/Carrboro More Affordable?Lanza’s Cafe, Carrboro, NC
Starting at Lanza's Cafe, we'll take a one-hour walk around the Main St/Poplar neighborhood in Carrboro as professional urban planner and longtime Carrboro resident Patrick McDonough shows us how duplexes, fourplexes, and other "missing middle" housing types fit in. These house-scale buildings fit seamlessly into existing residential neighborhoods and support walkability, locally-serving retail, and public transportation options. Featuring more smaller units on the same land, these housing options are much more affordable than single family homes. The neighborhood has many of these types of housing mixed in among single family homes and local businesses that were built from the 1960s to 1980s, but few have been built in town in recent decades.
At the end of the walk, we'll return to Lanza's to talk about the environmental and other benefits that these types of homes provide to residents and local businesses, and how the currently in-draft Carrboro Comprehensive Plan can be improved to support more of these more affordable housing choices in our community.
Note: You must RSVP through the official Sierra Club event page and agree to the associated waiver before joining the walk.
