THE SIERRA MOUNTAINEERING GROUP is dedicated to exploring and experiencing the best of mountain climbing and mountain travel in the Sierra Nevada and beyond. Anyone who has an interest in exploring mountaineering is welcome, you only need have the "desire to go higher." As group organizer, I am a professionally trained mountaineer and outdoor educator, and all of our events are hosted personally by me. With the added expertise of the enthusiasts who join this group, SMG provides personalized and rewarding adventures in the mountains for all.

WHAT MEMBERS GET OUT OF THE SIERRA MOUNTAINEERING GROUP
SMG organizes inspiring climbing adventures to high, beautiful and wild places. The goal of every event is to have a rewarding experience with friends, and learn the craft of mountaineering over a period of time. This enables every participant to advance their skills and abilities in:
- All aspects of climbing, descending and routefinding technique on rock, snow, and ice from beginning to advanced
- Basic and advanced ropework, knots, belay, and anchors on rock, snow, and ice
- Principles of on and off trail navigation with map, compass, and GPS
- Appropriate gear, equipment, footwear, and clothing
- Thriving while climbing, camping and traveling in the rock, snow, ice and challenging conditions of the mountains
- Essential mountain skills such as understanding weather, dangerous conditions, and decision making
- Personal assistance in getting ready, gear check if needed, and help all along the way
...and plenty of time to get answers to your questions, take pictures, and enjoy the experience.

WHY JOIN THE SIERRA MOUNTAINEERING GROUP?
Climbing with other enthusiasts is energizing, and being mentored by others is the best way to learn something new. You can share your knowledge and expertise with others, so we all learn together. Based on group input, SMG selects the peaks and arranges the experiences so members can start with the basics and progress under careful guidance to higher and more difficult routes if they so choose. By taking care of the research, logistics, and risk management considerations, SMG makes it easy for you to focus on the experience. SMG is organized by a professionally trained mountaineer and outdoor educator with over 10 years experience leading and teaching. There are no mandatory fees to join or participate, although there is a suggested donation of $40 for each event which helps cover the opportunity for expert level instruction, gas for the carpool, provided technical gear, and the benefits of a well organized group.
